Generally, no they can't. 'cept for the obvious Arielbots, Skyfire, Powerglide.

Chalk it up to inconsistent 80's toon writing.

The first three were more or less a movie.....after that I guess the writers needed a way to introduce some differences between the decepticons and autobots. Also I guess they needed a way for the decepticons to be able to retreat....so no more flying autobots (for the most part).

Or, maybe since the decepticons were always after energon they were always running on a full tank of gas, and the non greedy autobots who wouldn't steal or ask for extra energon wouldn't take any so then they couldn't fly.

yeah, that's my paranoid dilusion for ya.

I was under the impression only certain bots could fly b/c they were -designed- that way by the Ark. For the most part, they could not, the only exceptions I remember, included Skylinx, Jetfire and the Aerialbots.

In the original 3 shows they all could fly.

For the most part they couldn't (except season 3 there for the most part they could). I remember even in More than Meets the Eye on the third part Prime needed Sideswipes jetpack to fly but was shown flying earlier without one. I can remember the Autobots would fall and someone had to catch them, but on some episodes (I remember Prime in particular, and one other) they would fall in a canyon (can't remember what episode and to many to look though all of my DVD's) and then flew out and attacked the Decepticons. Just people not knowing that they couldn’t fly. I like Brawl's explanation :thumb . But in "War Dawn" Orian Pax's marveled at the fact that these new Transformers (Decepticons) could fly. So just bad continuity.

The Dinobots had the ability to fly as well. I dont think they ever addressed why, though.

Yes, I remember the Autobots being able to fly in More than Meets the Eye, but in the third part, Prime needed Mirage's (?) jetpack to reach the Decepticon spaceship....

The dinobots could...I remember them flying into to save the day, when Slag made the realization that you save the ones with the autobot symbol on their chest...but the cars couldn't (save Tracks, though why would he have that mode and not be a triple changer?). Probably post movie they all got upgrades...

yeah, all the dinobots could fly while in robot mode, but only in the cartoon. I don't recall seeing them fly in the comics. In fact, I don't remember seeing any Autobots fly in the comic, other than the ones who can fly in vehicle mode. Except from Prime, he flew into Unicron in Marvel US G1 #75.
