The Great MISB Debate

Recommended Posts

NEVER MISB... there will be thousands of these things in 30 years.. because all of us and the fanboys... therefore they will only be worth what we would pay for them.... things are worth more because of rarety.. so if you have a lucky draws or a G1 Misb AFA rated at 90 them keep it that way... but your red Meister Binaltech... may be worth 80 bucks in 30 years... at that rate... your better of spending money on stocks now.

I have a slightly different spin on it.

I like stuff that is rare.  Because of that, I will keep things MISB from time to time.  I don't "play" with my TFs anymore.  I'm 32 and outside of transforming them a few times to appreciate the complexity of these little plastic devils, I don't mess with them much past that.  First and foremost I am a collector.  I collect because it brings me joy to collect.  Having rare pieces is a collectors dream.  So keeping things MISB is a way of making my collection and those pieces in my collection more rare.

So this is how I usually do it.

Current line stuff.  Galaxy force.  I open every new mold if it is a brand new one.  Prime, Megs, Live Convoy, and all the rest.  But, if it is a repaint, a.k.a. Dark Nitro Convoy, I keep him MISB.  Unicron was much the same.  My son has one and his is open.  I use his for toying around with and for comparison pics.  My Armada Unicron and Energon Unicron are both MISB however.

Past Line stuff.  If I get a Beast Wars figure, usually I'll keep him MISB.  My Optimus Primal and Megs are that way, Silverbolt, TM2 Cheetor, etc.  However, I have curbed my desire to "transform" these by Transforming the molds when I see them at a show or in someone elses collection.

Rare Exclusives.  I never take these out of their boxes.  These are rare figures and I want to keep them that way.  They become rarer each time someone opens one up.  So I encourage you all to open as many as you like.  Because I am going to sell them later on?  No.  Because it makes my collection better.

MISB for me isn't about the money.  It isn't about the investment.  I am a collector...plain and simple.

I've opened every tf I've ever bought, and I only regret it in certain cases because I can't return them anymore.  I really don't see the point in keeping them MISB, becuase even if they do double in value in 10 years, I bet I could get a better return on my money by investing in other things.

Yes I am a MISBer.  Same reasons as some that are given: No time to play, I loose stuff, I break stuff, my daughters break and loose stuff.  I do like MIB G1.  Now that I do have time to play with.  I mean who really has time to play with especially with all the new stuff coming out.

I mean who really has time to play with especially with all the new stuff coming out.

I have less time, so I just buy less.

I like to keep my Binaltechs MISB for the chipping and scratching....My Alternators I open and display. The current and past current lines....i tend not to open because I dont really have an interest in playing with them, however I collect them because they are transformers. My G1 stuff is a mix of MIB abd loose. I dont have any MISB G1 stuff since they are all from my childhood. I have all the USA boxes that have styrofoam and a good amount of the rest, but still a large amount that are loose and that is ok with me  :-)

I collect mostly G1, mostly reissues.  I have doubles of all of my TRU reissues, and I plan to keep one set MISB - but I can't explain why.  I just like the idea of it.  It's definitely not to sell later.  I open all of my Takara's, mainly because I don't want to pay for two of each, since they are more expensive.

There is very little chance that the TF's of today that we collect will be worth much in the future.  If you want an investment, you are *much better off* taking $50 and buying some cheap stock instead of a Cybertron Supreme SS.  I open all of the Cybertron toys I buy...

True story - a coworker of mine sent two daughters through 4 years of private college exclusively with the windfall from investing a few grand in cheap Hershey stock she bought in the early 80's (bought it for 2 dollars a share, and watched it soar to 40 dollars a share with two splits in between) ...

Stock is stock and toys are toys.

Never the two shall meet.

Tell me about your friend who bought transformers, waited 20 years for them to be come valuable, then sold them and put her kids throught collage?

No?

I'm sorry but toys are for playing with. They're not investments. If you get lucky and make money on them. Cool. But don't count on it and don't compare them with real world trade goods.

Um, that was kind of my point...  Stocks are an investment, toys are not...

I dunno about the rest of you, but I really would like to do the old buy two open one when I have the cash. but for now, I box repaints and remakes and the few doubles that I get my hands on for two reasons. One: I will want to fish them out later, maybe even much later when all my other figs are gone. and Two: the good ol' money reason, tho they may not completely support me financially, I can at least buy some more tfs with the money.  :tflaugh

Let me put my opinion on this in simple terms.  In the last six months I picked up the Road Caeser team MISB, cost me about 250, I promptly opened all three of the guys and combined him.

Got Lio Kaiser recently as well, wasn't a Sealed box, but I did the same thing.  I enjoy playing with and posing my bots.  I like setting them up on the shelf.  And though I do keep some of the rarer or cooler looking boxes, Most go to the trash as I have no plac to store them and no desire too.

True my bots are getting affected by light and temp more.  True they aren't gonna stay minty fresh.  But then I never plan on selling most of them.  They are for my enjoyment.  If in the future I for some reason I loose interest they will all get boxed up for my kids if i ever have any.  But for now I'm a big kid who enjoys his toys:)
