WAX - we should use it more

Recommended Posts

Short background:  I'm in dental school right now, and I've been using wax to make teeth for the past few weeks.

My question is, why don't kitbashers use them more?

I know modellers use it all the time, but I haven't seen much use of it on TF kitbashes.

The stuff is AWESOME for making all types of Blot.  Heads, custom parts, etc.  If you screw up, just add some more wax.  It's dang good.  It's easy to carve and comes out smooth as silk.

The only downside is a mold and cast must be made from it, but if you want awesome details, you gotta try wax out.

End rant I guess.

But please fellow kitbashers, try it out.  If it's good enough for teeth, it should be good enough for toys ;) :D.

Bye for now.

I never thought of it, mainly because I'm not much of a "hardcore" Kitbasher, (no dremmel, no fancy paints)  But I think you might've answered you question as to why more people don't use it-  You have to make a mold.  That is a big undertaking for the average guy and I don't think more then a handful here do molding themselves.

pike

that could be a good way to mold peices needed for alts or a custom kitbash

cool, didnt knew you were a dental technician too Furious :)

I've used wax one time on a custom, I was sculpting a head in resin and it needed some hair (mecha hair) in front of the face, but without touching the face, so I filled it with wax, then I could put resin on it

to remove wax all you need is boiling water

making molds on wax you need silicon based putty

If you wanted to make and submit a tutorial for it over at Transtopia I know I'd try it at least once...

TFM

It does sound very interesting. I like TFM would try it. If you could post instructions on transtopia after monday since it is down right now I`d really appreciate it.

That does sound like a good idea, Furious. is it a special kind of wax, or just regular old candle wax? while my funds and tools are a little limited right now, i wouldn't be opposed to trying it.

a word of advice to everyone be extremely careful when handling silicon aas it is rather toxic if absorbed throught the skin or lungs

prerably wear a good set of rubber glos triple layer if possible and wear a breathing mask on your face.

Wax might be good to use to make a mold actually.  Problem I have with it is its gota be hot in order to be molded, and heating (in at least my lousy work area) is not an option cept for maybe a hot glue gun.

Using wax to make something like a head might not be a good idea because it can either melt or break if moved.  Tried using hot glue in the same manor and its not the best stuff to use (original heads I made for G1 Ironhide and Ratchet were hot glue casts).

But using wax as a mold maker might work really well.

Melt the wax, spray the reprocuded item with cooking oil and set in the wax.  Let it cool and then cut it 1/2 very carefully.  then you'll have the negative mold so you can add something like modeling clay, press the mold carefully together and pop out the replica.

trick is to make the mold sturdy enough so it doesn't break and it lines up with the other side.

I think he means more about wax castings and sculptures.

The surface of it is alot eaiser to carve from and easy to smooth providing heat.

Alot of second step castings from a mold are use to help fine tune details on said project peice.

Still, even an easy to follow tutorial would help.

Molds made from clay really suck to use. Remember, most resins heat up when casted.
