Older cars getting licensed isn't out of the ordinary. Check the diecast aisles, you'll see what I mean. :) ]

AFAIK, their quality is just as good as any mainline tf and they're not really based on any Alternator molds other than transforming into the same model of car. is any transforming toy that's not produced by Hasbro/TakTom considered a knock-off?

knock offs can be considered in 2 schools:

1) any use of a mold not under the main line. Your 2-ups and crystal cassettes are examples of this.

2) anything trying to cash in on a popular trend or line. These are also called rip-offs or spin-offs (this would be where your Roadbots fit in). Go Bots and Convertors also fit under this area.

Check your eyes.  A bunch of 'em are clearly modified from Alt transformations.  The yellow one is obviously based on Alt. Tracks, for instance.  The SUV also shares some similarities with Energon Ironhide.

However, knockoffs, despite what we usually see of them, aren't necessarily relegated to direct copies and cheap replications.  At its core, a knockoff is simply an imitation product, designed to hitch on to the popularity of a much more well-known product, leeching off another companies' commercial successes.

You're actually describing two different things.

1) any use of a mold not under the main line. Your 2-ups and crystal cassettes are examples of this.

These are bootlegs, not knockoffs. Bootlegs are the ones that use the actual mold of legit figures or use imitations under the real banner. Those tapes are like a double whammy since they're made to trick people into thinking they're the real deal all the way down to the logos and package art.

2) anything trying to cash in on a popular trend or line. These are also called rip-offs or spin-offs (this would be where your Roadbots fit in). Go Bots and Convertors also fit under this area.

Correct. These qualify as knockoffs, but since people usual look at knockoffs as being of extremely low quality, Road-Bots and Go-Bots don't entirely fit with this. People are more likely to call them imitations. Some of the stuff at Big Lots are definite knockoffs.

A watch that looks identical to a Rolex all the way down to the logo, but isn't real is a bootleg.

A watch that looks vaguely like a Rolex but spelled Rollex is a knockoff.
