I had a fan fic idea where sometime after the great war or what ever, there was some huge battle where Slag was the only one that was in a position to save the day, and some how he goofed and ended up blowing up the planet.  Everyone was yelling OH SLAG!!!!  Yep, he's slag.  They slagged Slag. 

 

That's about what happens when you send a Dinobot in to difuse a energon bomb with a hammer...SLAG! 

I figured it came from slag being jerk all the time, and then his name became an insult.  From there, it developed into an all purpose phrase.
