I was watching the history channel the other day and came across a program called Modern Marvels on the Biggest Machine, and I saw this thing...

If you want to know more, it's name is the Marion 6360 shovel, aka "The Captain"

Man, even the color scheme looks like it.  so I wonder if they designed it after this thing.

fix the pic, dummy.

*SMACK*

This is Megalo Convoy's altmode

What is that thing called and what's its purpose? I just don't see a need for a super huge saw on anything unless there is a reasonable explanation.

Mine equipment.  Strip mining/pit mineing I'd assume.  Basically big saw cuts deep into the earth, allows them to go deeper faster.  As far as I know there aren't very many of them in the world.  THey have to be built on site, and they don't move very far from where they are built.

The Earth Mover moves at a speed of 1\3 MPH, or 1 mile every 3 hours. It's cheaper for the company to build one and move it than to keep dismantling it and rebuiilding it site-to-site. Bear in mind that one of these things would only really move once very 10 years or so, when the site it's at is exhausted.

They do look amazing.
