So, I've been watching a few G1 episodes

Recommended Posts

I agree withe Mike completly. The shows are just bad these days. i dont think ive seen a good cartoon on tv since nickelodeon first appeared on tv about 10-15 years ago i think.....at least around the time Mega Man appeared. And dont tell me those new CN shows are worthy of being creative of any kind. i couldnt watch them now even if you forced me. Theyre just so bad. Im not even going to get started with WB and Fox's idea of good cartoons these days. If you want specific examples..just post.

G1 means more to me that the last 3 series, difference is I like the last 3 series.

Anytime a series is re-done, it will be different.  Some of us (at one point myself)

want these shows to be just like G1 or Beast Wars.  Then when we quickly realize

they are not, we start a thread and start kicking the crap out of whichever show

is on at the time.  Just because a show is not like G1 or Beast Wars doesn't mean

it's a terrible show.  I once thought Beast Wars was un-watchable because it

wasn't G1.  I got over that and watched every episode and I realized Beast Wars

is good, and I don't have to hold a G1 measuring stick to every Transformer show.

And just for the record, I am NOT a fan of Armada/Energon/Cybertron. But when I look at G1 dispassionately, it's really hard for me to objectively say that it was better than these cartoons. It certainly didn't have better animation, that's for sure.

Madhammers right. I was a G1/BW fanboy, but after watching all of Superlink, I have to say it is atleast as good as G1. GF is not bad either, but the kids have been getting to me. I can't support Armada since I've only seen one episode. I never was a fan of RiD, but I think that is due to it going the opposite direction of what I expected after BM.

Second that motion.

Sure they had flaws but were still memorable. Armada and Energon were rather forgetful.

Will get the first Cybertron DVD in next week so I am eagerly waiting to see if that is any better.

They were memorable becuse of Nastalga.

:roll

That is part of it. The nostalgia makes them cool nowadays. I love watching them now because I remember how fondly I watched them as a child.

But as a child I watched the shows because I thought they were good. Not purely for the stories (and I could not care less about the animation) but the Transformers themselves.

The characters were very memorable and some of those (Optimus Prime, Starscream, Soundwave, Shockwave, Jazz, Bumblebee, Kup, The Dinobots, Wheeljack) are still among my favorite characters.

Sure the stories are not that great and the animation was at times really poor. But the characters could still liven it up a lot.

That is also why Beast Wars is so well loved. The characters were awesome.

The problem with Armada/Energon and perhaps also Cybertron is that they try to remake classic G1 characters and rewrite G1 plotlines without really trying something radically different.

Most of the characters are rather bland to begin with so it is hard to like them and therefor like the cartoon. I am sure that had I seen Armada/Energon as a kid I would have hated it.

Well, meh for Armada and dislike/hate for Energon. As a kid I loathed shows where machines were dominated/controlled by humans (mostly because Transformers showed how it SHOULD be) and that is just what Energon is. A show revolving around the annoying human Kicker and his lackeys, the Transformers.  :tftongue

And I am not comparing it to G1. I do not mind different. I also love Enterprise and that is a completely different Star Trek show than anything that preceeded it.

I loved Beast Wars and Beast Machines and the latter was the most radical Transformers show. But it was good because it dared to be different.

Armada and Energon have not been that original at all. That is what makes them lacking.

The power of Transformers lies in the change. Literally. As Micromasters showed, Transformers can adapt to almost any change toys go trough. The last 3 toyslines have been very innovative from Mini-Cons to Powerlinking/Hyper modes to Force Chips/Planet Keys.

Sadly the Armada and Energon did not realize its potential. I mean how cool would it have been if the Mini-Cons could talk and there was an actual Autobot/Mini-Con partnership such as Batman and Robin had?

Say what you will for the Dreamwave comics but they got that right!

"the girl who loved powerglide"

I was very disappointed to discover that that episode was not about lube

Oh, god I am sigging this.

:rofl

Dang. You beat me to it! I knew I should've read this board last night. :tfmad

G1 was more light hearted than the current series, though.

I agree with that, but I don't know if that makes it better or worse.

And I should add that it's impossible to objectively compare G1 to Cybertron if you grew up on G1. It's just not going to happen. We all bla bla bla about nostalgia, but it really is a powerful thing. Watching something you enjoyed as a kid makes you feel like you are back in that simpler, (happier?) time. Which has nothing to do with the quality of the show itself.

well, a light-hearted cartoon is easier to enjoy than one that is semi-serious.

also, G1 focused more on the bots themselves rather than their human allies. the japanese can't characterize non-humans for Blot.

in your opinion

your expectation is based upon what G1 was. Kids who have never seen G1 aren't going to know or care.
