Customs rant

Recommended Posts

It's moronic to be charged import tax on an item that ins't available locally in the first place.

true, but how are customs supposed to know what is available and what not? if there has to be a completely up to date rulebook, then please go ahead and make one, but I dont know if you'll have enough time with the rest of your life

so the shop you recommended is a great idea, but sadly only for japanese items (so far, as there are rumors that they might import US exclusive TFs somday)

I

Hasbro items are a different story,  they can't be wholesaled from the US by a seller due to rules stipulated by Hasbro.

As for the moronic thing..........  I actually had a conversation with an 'Employee' about this. Told him i could proove with 100% accuracy the BT's in question were not and will never be available here, and thus asked him why i should be taxed on something that wasn't available here in the first place.

Needless to say i was wasting my breath.  The word 'Accuracy'  confused him i think.

As for UPS, they're incompitent in pretty much all countries, in a past job we called them 'oops'

Know the feeling.  :thumb

I like helping people as well. Afterall it is the decent thing to do.

As for the fan suggestion, it is appreciated. I have one fan aimed in my direction which works of. Not sure about aiming it directly at me as it is not advised to sit before a running fan while sweating.  I think I did so once and my back was troubling me later.

I sweat really fast though. Even an lenghty game of Outlaw Tennis has me sweating. Oh  well, at least it is cool where I work.  :tftongue

Wow, and I thought the maximum suckitude of customs was unique to the Philippines. :P

For major businesses, customs take too long to process and their fees are pretty high. Some even want bribes or you have to shoulder their highway robbery fees. That's why I've never tried E-Baying or buying from online stores because I might end up paying double the price of what I bought. You have to be able to get really good connections with freight companies if you want some decent customs costs. The rest probably just smuggle their stuff in.

To answer your question Satanstorm, the current Dutch government is hardly socialistic. People here are able to spend less and less because prices keep going up while the wages stay the same.

And if the covernment has a big cash bonus, they do not use it to help the people who need it but to pay off state debts. While it is completely normal for a country to have those and not a piority to pay those off.

Do not want to start a political argument but I just wanted to answer that question.

But the custom laws were made when a socialist government was in place so they are very protective indeed. Strange considering people only import stuff they cannot get here.

Europe is very protecive of their own trade up to the point where it becomes very unfair, especially to the poorer countries.

Good answer, BDS9F, I wasn't sure how the EU is handling customs now that their economy is supposedly harmonized.

So does that mean if Netherlands has this type of trouble with customs, we can expect to see other countries like Germany and Italy to have the same problems?

BTW, I hope I don't sound too political when I ask these questions....

Not sure if the customs in other countries is different aside from the fact that they are all jerks.

I think what one is allowed to import varies per country. I think that one day that may be corrected but right now I am betting that like the gas prices, not every country has the same rules.

But you can bet they will all be very difficult when you import large quantities.

However when I buy stuff from other European countries, say Belgium (where Archonia is located), then I do not have to pay import tax.

Makes little sense when thinking about it but it is at least one small victory for the collector.
