For example, if there ended up being upwards of 20 characters on each side would each one have gotten the same amount of screen time?  Without screen time characterization can't be shown.

well, that's an extreme case. extreme cases always effect stuff. i could say that 1 character on each side would have been superior character development wise easily. i was talking about in general. >.>

Just because it has nukes doesn't mean it's not a soap opera, Smookimus. i'm refering to the characterization in the series. pratically everybody is angsty and/or mellodramatic.

 

EditL Just abotu the only gundam series' that I can tihnk of that weren't angsty and melodramatic were Gundam Wing(Instead of angst, it focused on destruction.) and G Gundam. too bad G Gundam had a crappy ending.

I do like Gundam, BTW. the mellodramaticness bugs me a lot though. probably why I like Gundam Wing so much. it had little, if any of it. yeah, I know it's a ripoff of Mobile Suit Gundam, but it's a cool ripoff that works better than the original.

 

I'd say Cowboy Bebop is a great example, myself.

Gotta disagree there.. maybe on the acount of Heero being a total ass munch through the whole thing for no real reason.. 08 MS Team is the best one I think. It's just so short and usually kicked under the table, it wouldn't surprize me if no one's heard of it. It's a good story though. Realistic.. no flashy super power speical gundam robots here.

 

.. I think the writers were given more creative freedom in the sense of setting.. seriously, would you want to see Cheetor and Rhinox running around in the city? It wouldn't make a bit of sense.
