Why did big bots always sound stupid?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering: why, in the G1 cartoon, could supersize bots (gestalts, Omega supreme, Metroplex, Trypticon...) never speak normally? They always had a stupid voice, or were really stupid, or both. They generally articulated one word at a time and never made long sentences.

Maybe the art department thought that a long conversation between a Transformer and another TF ten times its size would look weird and wouldn't be easy to draw?

Even Metroplex, who was supposed to be smart, clearly wasn't. E.G. his extremely moronic accusations towards the Dinobots in "Thief in the night"

Computron was supposed to be smart too but his favourite topic was how will I defeat Abominus...

:eek  Blanket stereotypes in an '80's cartoon?!?!?!  The hell you say!

:tflaugh

Seriously, that's just the way of the times.

*Remembers the one episode where Omega Supreme decided to break his speech impediment "one time only" to tell Optimus a story about his origin*  :lol

Gesalts have an excuse... They aren't so much a total sum of the groups intelligence, but are closer to being a mob in that they're as smart as their dumbest member, divided by 5. They need to agree on everything the gesalt does, which limits the intellectual capacity of gesalts.

The only exception to this is Computron, and even then that's arguable. He was intelligent, but was about as "smart" as your average gesalt.

The Cityformers don't have any excuse though. Trypticon was a nutcase, though.

For the democratic responce Skylynx was anything BUT stupid...

Predaking was a near perfect blending of his component parts but he opperated on pure instinct.

I liked Trypticon's new personality from the WW comics...arrogant before he had proof of his skills

maybe they had a slow voice but still had combined knowledge, and low people skills.

word. predaking was THE most successful combiner bc they almost all functioned the same. in his case, take his hunting and fighting skills and multiply it by five

I remember that one. It seemed odd, to be honest. He was always walking around like "Situation: Dire. Resolution: Blow sh*t up." .. and that one episode he was like 'Hey homie Gs whats goin down yo' :redface

Big = dumb.. unless your Tankor.. then it's all an act. :thumb

Why limit it to G1?  Tidal Wave wasn't exactly a tower of intelligence.

For all his supposed power, Unicron (in all the series) was dreadfully stupid in the arrangement of his plans.
