Swoop - WFT is he?!

Recommended Posts

Right. I need the help of a smart-arse.

Swoop.

Is he Pterodactyl or Pteranodon. If my memory serves me, 'dactyl' means something to do with having finger bones (like a bat does).

Therefore if that's the case, then Swoop is most definately a Pteranodon, as they have a head rudder to steer, due to NOT having finger bones to alter their wing surface geometry.

Smart-arses required please.  :tfgrin

Pterodactyls were semi small with no real head crest.

Pteranodons were much larger with an extended single head crest, this is our swoop.

My vote goes for pteranadon

*clears throat*

Swoop is most representative of Pteranodon ingens, although the sturdiness of body is perhaps more appropriate for P. sternbergi, the head crest is unmistakably P. ingens.

P. ingens hails from the Late Cretaceous of Western North America, and was one of the largest pterosaurs of all time, with a wingspan of about 7.5m/ 25 feet.

Pterodactylus on the other hand had a wingspan of about 50–75 cm (20–30 inches), that lived on lake shores during the late Jurassic era in Europe and Africa. Originally called Ptero-dactyle antiquus, however it was Latinized to the current name in 1815.

Smart arse enough for you?  :tflaugh

woot to a fellow dino fan (though i'd need a book for the exact stuff and the scientific full names).

I thought he was just a terradactyl.

That thingamabob that you guys mentioned doesn't have the head crest (google, google).

that red thing on his head is what we are talking about. It can be called a growth, horn, crest, wahtever realy. It's an extension off the back of the skull, thus Pteranodon seen here: http://www.unicron.us/tf1985/figures/swoop.htm

pteradactyls are these guys: http://www.buddycom.com/dinos/3d03/pterodactyl02.jpg

see, no extra thing on the back of the head.

The family (all flying saurians) IS named after the pteradactyl though!
