IDW - Artwork Question

Recommended Posts

These are more acurate then Dreamwave's remakes and pretty too.

Well, those banners were created just for the SDCC IDW booth, so I thought to take the opportunity to draw something different and unique from all the re-designs seen so far... and go back to the original toys... these are in no way a preview of what you'll see in the comics! (which BTW, will be penciled by EJ Su).

Also, attached a photo of the Prime banner I found around in some website (sorry don't remember which one)...

Cool an official response! Post often. Or when ever posible. I see with Prime you had no choice but to touch him up. Well Megs too but he's damn close to the original toy. I love that Prowl pic. It's funny that I recently took Prowl, Megatron,  Starscream, Optimus, Soundwave, Jazz and Soundwave out of their packaging prison. Now I see these cool drawings looking just like toys I recently inspected. That's wild. Great job.

GUIDO any pics of MEGATRON transforming??

sorry, I only did those banners... and my Megatron is the classic P38 (I don't know anything about the new alt modes if this is what you were looking for)

Totally agree. Your work was awesome!  :thumb

I would love it if the IDW art would mirror the original bots' more than the heavily stylized DW work... it was good too, but I think these banners (and thank you, Guido!) is a perfect balance of those first "static" IDW images and the more anime-influenced "puffy" DW style.

Okay, a couple of comments and a question:

One, I LOVE the toy-accurate banners, especially G1 Megatron (with the "chest hairs").  I really wish they would use these in their comics, but I'm sure they won't.

Two, why use updated car modes but NOT updated ALT car modes?  If they're going to set these during modern times and not the 80's, which I'm sure they will, it seems like it would've made more sense to do a kind of "Alternators story."  It wouldn't have to mirror the BT story, just employ recognizable Alt modes.  I mean, that would make a lot more sense from a marketing standpoint, and the G1'ers who don't have their Alt forms yet could just be drawn G1-style.

Finally, how can they draw Prowl as a new, unlicensed car like that?  I mean, Hasbro has the Acura license for Prowl, not that.  Aren't there some copyright or other legal issues involved here?

They may not want to be caught out when new Alts are released.

I think legal issues would crop up if the design was used on a toy. For a comic, it's probably enough to not label the cars as the makes they're based on.
