Don Murphy Confirms Michael Bay Signed On

Recommended Posts

Don't bring up Arcee again guys. She's gonna be in the movie, now deal :P

I can't stand the prissy, pink bint so I'm happily pushing for Hound in there instead. ;)

I like the potential character Arcee can become (e.g., Wrecker's RC, after Daniel and Wheelie bought it), but I love Hound, so I'm with you there Angelophile.

A Transformer that would rather be human and stay on Earth? Seems like a perfect fit for a movie that's supposed to be somwehat serious.

I was actually being a smartass... (teh shock)

What I meant is: why do people expect a G1-themed movie to be more than G1 itself was?

Should we expect it to be less?

I can't do it.  I know it's not going to win any academy awards but is a half-decent movie too much to hope for?  No matter how much the fans whine and beg and complain, the ultimate choice is with the ones making the movie.  I'm still trusting them to be able to tell what is stupid and what will work.

I'm not expecting it to be less. Less would be "Robot Jox" or something. When I said that Michael Bay's worst movie is better than G1, I was serious.

So ... you're saying that G1 can't be improved upon because it's inherently bad?

If that is what you mean, I disagree wholeheartedly.

No, this is what I mean:

If they improve upon G1, then great. What I don't like is people getting *upset* about Michael Bay directing this movie because they see Bay's talent as not up to par with their expectations. I find that ironic because the G1 cartoon is hopelessly cheesy and dated, and yet people act as though it were this great thing that deserved the best Hollywood has to offer. It isn't, and it doesn't.

Again, stepping outside of the TF bubble, you would find that most people would be surprised that they are even making a Transformers movie at all.

I really don't understand the hate or resentmeny towards G1 sometimes. In fact, some of the people who complain about the "fanboys" are just as bad and obnoxious as the "fanboys" themselves. In all honestly, aren't we all "fanboys"? I don't see the point in labeling people like that when we're all here and have the same interest.

My other problem is, so what of some people would like to see some things done the way they would like it? Some people happen to be very passionate about this hobby, just like I'm sure some of you might be passionate about other things we wouldn't understand. Who are we to judge whether it's right or wrong? As long as it's presented in a resptectable and well thought out manner, then what's the problem? I know there are some people who don't act that way, and yes they really are annoying. To be honest though, DM hasn't exactly been the most professional person. I realize it's his board and blah blah bleeh blah, but I don't know of any job where you can go around cursing at people, being an arrogant ass, an just being an all around prick without getting fired. People may be jerks, but stooping to their level really doesn't make you the better person or show any amount of maturity.

Just because the guys is an A-list director, or has money, doesn't give him the right to be an a$$hole towards people.

MH, easy on the anti-G1 fire here. Am I gonna attack you for being an SW fanboy? No. I like SW too, but not as much as TF. But I don't understand attacking something that's the most common board discussion topic (the original show). Attacking Transformers on a Transformers fan site...uh... :tfhuh

ON TOPIC (but still related to what Manhammer said): Did Garfield or Inspector Gadget "deserve" Hollywood treatment? No, and only Satan could have been at work when it comes to what we got out of those properties. Now G1 is getting the same treatment, and who's to say what Bay's gonna do with it? Of course, I don't really care much for Murphy, and I dunno what'll result from Bay working with such a self-important Afterburner as Don, but it's gonna be heavily debated, no matter what.

I don't care if you rip on SW. I can defend myself. Anyway, I'm not saying any of this just because I feel like being an ass; all I'm doing is trying to convey the non-TF fan's reaction to all of this, because I think it's relevant to the discussion.

You have to understand what I mean when I refer to G1. I'm not saying "oh Beast blah is way better than G1 etc." I'm talking about what non-fans would think of the show today. I'm well aware of the fact that non-fans probably wouldn't think too much of BW/BM either. But that's not my point.

My point is this: I just wish people could just STFU and be grateful that they're even making a TF movie at all. People flame Don Murphy up and down all day long, and then when he gives some back, they turn into crybabies and say "oh he's being unprofessional." What a cop-out. He's a regular person, just like you or me. So what if he's opinionated? You better hope he is, if he's gonna go to bat for the fans when it comes time to decide the direction the film's going in.

And being antagonistic toward the one guy who is listening to the fans is a pretty dumb way to get what you want.

I think that when it comes to comic/cartoon based movies, it's typically hit or miss, and the misses are missed horribly.  The film can be handled in much the same way as the likes of Inspector Gadget, Batman 3 & 4, Punisher (1991 version), Phantom, etc, or it can handled like Superman 1 & 2, X-Men (both), Spiderman (both), etc.  Actually, chances are that it will fall somewher in between these groups, but fans want it to be as good as it can be, and that's why hopes, if not expectations, are so high.

Now originally I was dead-set against Bay, but at that time I was operating under the false belief that he was the director of Mission Impossible 2.  I have since learned that John Woo was responible for that A.D.D.-fueled, homo-erotic, piece of Blot shampoo comercial, and that while he's no Orson Welles, Michael Bay is a fine director whose style might lend pretty well to TF's.  Hell, there's nothing wrong with fast-paced action and lots of destruction, we just need a decent story with great dialogue as well.

Ah.  I get what you're saying now.  And actually I kind of agree.

Actually, in a lot of ways it would have been nice if they could have just made the movie secretly and just dropped the trailer one day with the release date.  I miss being surprised by a movie ... AND it would have saved a bunch of pre-opening angst.  The post-opening angst would still exist though .... unfortunately.

Usually I don't care who's involved in a movie myself, but when they make it a point to be an Afterburner to a lot of the die-hard fans, I'm not fond of that.

Personally, I'd like to see Murphy get slagged horribly, but that's just me.

Of course, a lot of the die-hard fans *are* Afterburners... From the moment news of this movie surfaced, people have been treating it as if it's their God-given right to have the movie be exactly the way they want it to be. The fandom has been acting like a bunch of spoiled brats. I think everyone just needs a good dose of STFU.

Normally I'd agree with you on this, and I think there is something to saying that it's OK for him to reply in kind somewhat to the comments he receives.  Still, this is supposed to be an important "Hollywood Guy" and despite the obnoxious behavior and downright whiny comments from the fans, Don Murphy has more than proved to be an obnoxious boor himself.  He's got the mental maturity level of a 14-year old sex-starved boy finally getting hold of his first Playboy.

Slagged?  Nah, I'd just prefer his sorry ass just disappeared and we didn't have to hear about this stuff anymore.

All producers are rude and obnoxious. They need to be to get their work done. I prefer Murphy's style over the whiny, passive-agressive ones, though...You know where they stand, they have a mission, and :note nothing's gonna stand in their way :note

I agree 100%. I like Murphy's style. But maybe that's just because he responds the way I would. :redface I know that if Don were a slick PR genius who gave everyone warm fuzzies all the time, people would bitch even more b/c they'd say he's full of sh*t. At least the guy's being honest and transparent (or is that translucent? I forget).
