The fact that hooked me was the fact that they were not just robots, but rather alien lifeforms.

The fact that the robot isn't just a static figure, but that it also is kind of a puzzle. moving parts have always fascinated me, and the fact that tramsformers are comprised of moving parts that merge into a seamless form is intriguing.

*thinks*

Because if it were not for Dinobot, us puny humans would not be here.

I like things that are more than what they appear to be. In transformers there's tons of variations on what they can change into, be it practical or not.. -Soundwave in a modern sense, Megatron being a gun.. Reflector, Perceptor-

thats one reason but the other is people like cars, planes & animals.

so that like double the coolness

Along with the puzzel aspects, Megatron and the Decepticons seemed less "Evil" than other cartoon villins

I got into it when I was 10 in 1984.  This was shortly after Return of the Jedi and I needed something to fill the gap left from the end of Star Wars.  Giant transforming robots from space seemed like the natural choice.

Plus, as fan of Marvel and DC these guys seemed cool with their bright colours and special powers (ie. Hound's holograms, Mirage's invisibility, Wheelie's rhyming!?!).

After the movie kids I knew at the time commented on how stupid it was for a robot to die.  I knew better and Beast Wars cemented my belief in TFs having souls when Sparks were introduced.  I always saw the depth in them.

Also, it was the 80's.  Why fool around with a Rubik's cube when you can play with a transport truck that turned into a robot with a gun that ate cubes (energon) for breakfast.

The two toys in one aspect mostly.

I also really like some of the other ideas that go along with transformers.  The gestalts, head/targetmasters, city bots, and the rest of the overall variety that exists in the TF universe of toys.

It's cool that a lot of us grew up on Transformers. There were so many cool toys out during the 80's and those of us here pretty much picked Transformers above all of them, from what I'm reading. That just shows that there is something that is really "more than meets the eye" when it comes to these bots. It's obviously what has kept them around for the past 20 or so years. Now, with it's continued success, we should get a movie made and hopefully it'll be something that brings new youth to Transformers for years to come.

My first contact with robots came with Mazinger Z(Tranzor Z in US) when I was 5 years old in 1976, then others came like Starvengers, Grendizer, Jeeg, Gaiking, Laserion, Spacekeeters, etc. I got hooked with giant robots instantly and i will dare say forever.

The first time i saw Tf's It was a big WTF is going on here? Sentient robots that transform?  I had seen tranforming robots in Starvengers, but TF took that to a whole new level. Giant sentient robots that transformed into everyday vehicles and other stuff.  It was a 180 degree turn in animation and toywise, there were no giant robot toys at stores then. needless to say Tf got all my attention.

I still love Giant robots and the new versions of Getter and Mazinkaiser are amazing but I prefer my TF's
