I don't see the Combiners as a family. Most of the Combiner groups bickered amongst themselves a lot, even the Aerialbots.

That's EXACTLY why they were like family.

It makes sense, but I don't consider Dinobot's evil clone to be Rampage's brother...DB2 was just a soulless machine whose only reason for being was to maim Maximals (until Rampage's death). I consider Reflector to be triplets, so to speak (they all share a single consciousness)

It was never explained like loads of things during G1 but I've always looked at G1 reflector duplicates as clone of a single bot sort of like Multiple Man. I say this because on one episode 3 Reflector bots were knocked into each other and as they colided, they became one bot.

soundwave created his cassete bots and so he was a father figure to them. the same could be said of grimlock and the technobots, when nosecone first came online he refered to grimlock as "father"

 

the combaticons were not family as they already existed

 

the dinobots could be considered family as they looked after eachother and would side with eachother rather than side with the autobots instead.

 

unicron and taranchulas were also related as were optimus prime and optimus primal (in bm primal describes him as "my ancestor" rather than "our ancestor" when talking to nightscream

i usually explaine the concept of brothers by using the spark retcon. maybe sometimes when a spark is created, it has a significantly above average energy level so as a resault, it splits in two(and in rare cases, three) to keep from overloading.

my sentiments almost the same idea as mine i think it involves the programming being seen as a great version so THUNDERCRACKER v1.0 SKYWARP 1.2 STARSCREAM 1.3 for the ELITES ie the dudes we see in the show x.0 for the general drone types!

As for relations, you don't have to be physically related to consider someone your brother or sister. Also, similar types of vehicles or other items might be considered "in the same family," a loose way of putting it.

I re-watched an RID Episode about Ultra Magnus where he kept saying he was Optimus Prime's brother. It bothered me a bit.
