the archetype portrayed by Han Solo is that of the rogue who go goes through a repemptive process. I know of no TF's who fit into that role.

 

The Luke Skywalker archetype is an age old one and Hot Rod fills that role to a tee. Alpha Trion plays the Obi Wan Kenobi / Yoda role. Arcee could be Leia, but she was hardly a damsel in distress (except during the escape from Autobot City.)

I figure that Prime was Obi Won in TFTM

PS- Magnus only went down in one shot for the same reason others in the movine did. Plot conveneince/bad writing. Brawn (who pwns all) took direct hits from Megatron plenty of imes before. But in order to eliminate some older characters and see new ones, they made it easy.

I don't get why people think he's lame based soley on the movie. I mean, c'mon. The movie tries to tell you Rodimus is awesome. You don't believe it then....

 

In the series, he tends to kick butt on a fairly regular basis. Thinking of one episode where in rapid sequence he punched Thrust then Dirge right out of the air, wrecking them entirely. Sure, he has issues, but c'mon. He was also brave as all-get-out. Shoot, just look at the lame scene we're taling about. Even there he sealed off the exit and let the others escape and turned to face by himself the whole group of Decepts that had just moments ago been beating the whole group of Bots he just saved. Later, there's an ep where Galvatron accuses him of being a coward because he didn't stop to fight him, then thinks about it and decides Magnus really isn't a coward, and if he's running... and summarily evacuates the PLANET.

The original idea for the scene was that Magnus was Drawn and Quartered by the Sweeps.

I think it was the fact that Ultra Magnus was one of the least interesting characters I'd ever seen. I didn't feel anything for his character at all; he was just there. But then there was a pervasive sense of "going through the motions" in much of Season 3.

Magnus was detroyed in one shot because originally he was animated to have been lassoed by the four sweeps (one per limb), then Galvatron ordered him to be quartered,  and he was pulled in 4 directions. After being animated it was deemed too violent and the second version was cut in of him being shot and exploding.

 

In the comic adaptation he is quartered.

 

In the movie, the matrix falls into Galvatron's hands as if Magnus was detroyed above him, the way he originally was when being quartered.
