You said it yourself - the same thing happened to Megatron when he grabbed G1 Megs' spark. Therefore the thing that made them change was the presence of two sparks in their bodies at the same time.

 

Plus, Optimal Optimus *stayed* Optimal Optimus after Prime's spark was returned to him. Rodimus Prime reverted to Hot Rod when the matrix left him.

Ah, but here it gets interesting. He may have stayed physically the same, but while Primal carried Prime's Spark, which might be the Matrix as well, assuming the G1 TFs did not have a Spark, and G1 megatron carried the Heart of Cybertron within himself, rather than a Spark, he(Primal) changed in character, utulizing a spech-pattern very much like Prime's, and very different from his own. While Primal had this Matrix/Spark, he was a different person, an "Optimal Optimus". When he reinserted the Spark/Matrix into Prime, Optimal Optimus reverted back to his original character, that of Optimus Primal.

 

One could easily argue that the Maximal Tech allows structural changes to be made permanently, while G1 tech did not have that ability.

 

One could also say that Rodimus was a wussy, and that only the Real Leaders, like Optimus Prime and Primal could keep their "upgraded" form without the Matrix. After all, Prime had left the Matrix in the hands of Magnus, and yet, when found in the Autobot Cemetery Shuttle, the Spaceship that carried those who sacriviced their lifes in the Great War, Prime still had his "upgraded" body-structure. THat would mean that only those who were really chosen by the Matrix/Primus/The AllSpark would be permanently changed, and those who weren't worthy would not change permanently. Perhaps the only reason Hot Rod changed in form, was because of the presense of Unicron, which urged the Matrix to use the nearest cybertronian being as Vessel for its power, and that Hot Rod was in fact never destined to carry the Matrix.

didn't the BW writers retcon the matrix into a mystical energy that bonded with the barer's spark as opposed to being a physical object? the matrix case in prime's chest was refered to as just a spark holder. maybe they also retconned the matrix's powers slightly so that when the barer gives it up, they don't revert to their previous form(which would make more sense IMHO).

That wasnt the Matrix it was a Decoy

 

Primal and Megs got Upgraded b/c they had 2 sparks, just like how Tigerhawk and Windrazer did.

ah, but things get interesting there. Tigerhawk and Megs were upgraded to TM2's while primal became Op-Op. maybe there was more to prime's spark, which is why primal became Op-Op instead of a TM2.

Megatron had more Exposore to the TM2 driver than Primal, seein as he found and experimented with it. Tigertron was a TM2 b/c the Vok helped in his creation.
