I actually think he was a better leader than Rodimus. Magnus seemed to be a good commander in the earlier part of the movie until the famous line that killed his credit. "I can't deal with that now". Magnus was a seasoned warrior and shoulda been capable of doing more than he did. Rodimus on the other hand was inexperienced and for that, he made a poor leader.

 

 

Another note, if Ultra Magnus was "Primed", what would his new title have been?

Luckily, Ultra Magnus's essence never bonded with the matrix. Woulda been a few steps back on the knowledge scale.

i read in a fanfic that re-wrote g1 that ultra-Magnus became known as magna prime.

 

it is stated in one of the episodes that the matrix rarely makes contact with the carrier (that would explain why alpha trion and UM did not change any shape when they had it)

 

you have to symphasise with magnus though. when he said "i can't deal with that now, he really couldn't, he had to concintrate on saving his ship, crew and the matrix from being destroyed by the unicronian decepticons.

I thought A3 was the tribes leader when the Autobots were leaving the Quints........

My thought is that the Matrix makes contact with its carrier....but those that are destined to carry it (Optimus prime etc) are changed on the wiring side to tap it's ultimate power, thus changing the outside look as well

The other reason that made him rather an idiot in the movie is that he considered an attack by Cyclonus and Galvatron to be the darkest hour knowing full well that they faced a greater threat in Cybertrons orbit. I wonder, If Magnus continued to lead, would he pull out the matrix everytime he saw a Decepticon.

 

 

With the whole "Can't deal with that bit", it may be a bit of fan hate cause everyone grew up with Optimus. Optimus could always find a solution and never buckled under pressure.

Well, if you follow what was loosely shown in the cartoon continuity, A-3 carried the matrix initially, helping him in guiding the early Cybertronians into freedom back from the Quintessons in the first Great Cybertronian war. Sometime around the beginning of the Second Cybertronian War, when the Cybertronians learned to transform, A-3 likely gave the Matrix to a more capable leader with the new abilities, while A-3 studied their new abilities and became the keeper of Vector Sigma. This other "Prime" who did not appear to survive the second war, passed the Matrix to Sentinel Prime, who would appear to have led the Autobots to victory at the end of the 2nd great war, and continued to lead in peacetime until Megatron executed him at the start of the 3rd great war, where he returned the Matrix to then Alpha Trion for safekeeping until a new Prime could be found. Alpha Trion then found his new "Prime" when Orion Pax and his friends were found critically wounded by Megatron. Alpha Trion then proceeded to rebuild Orion Pax around the Matrix to become Optimus Prime, Dion is suspect to have become Ultra Magnus, built to carry the Matrix if Optimus failed (and therefore Optimus's choice as successor), and also Ariel was rebuilt into Elita-1, also suspected to be able to carry the Matrix, due to her & Optimus having the same basic 'schematic.' But all 3 were built to carry the Matrix, and were not the chosen one. Then the enigma of Hot Rod's inception comes into play, whether he was built by "Primus" or Vector Sigma, was also built by Alpha Trion, "love child" of Op & Elita, or any number of originations. Regardless of his mysterious origins, he is the Chosen One whom the Matrix matured (also speculation that this 'maturing' would have eventually occurred regardless, the Matrix only accelerated the process out of necessity, as Hot Rod also appeared to be an enigma as one of few TF's including Alpha Trion who appeared to carry the ability to age & grow), and through basic visuals, appeared to have a similar visage as the original Cybertronians, speculation of course that they were built in the image of Primus, as was Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime. The forced maturation however did not mature his mind as completely as if he had grown into it, and through the poor storytelling of Season 3, and the cancellation of Season 4, we never got to see that mental maturation.

 

If you follow the Marvel comic continuity, Alpha Trion never existed.

 

And as far as the Dreamwave continuity, we may never find out what they had planned.
