"Gestalt"... where did that word come from?

Recommended Posts

yo Trench.

A few people on these boards know that I'm in a blues band. What you think of Gestalt for the name of my band? When you said it means that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, that pretty much defines us.

We don't really have a name, "Zephyre" was pushed around a few times too which one of the dudes said was latin for wind or something. Not sure if he was referring to me though... :wtf

Gestalt...hmm.. I'll drop it on the guys tonight. Don't think I've heard any other band by that name; maybe in the land of Doits (sp?)!

so what is the proper pronunciation of "gestalt"?

g(uh)-shtält' (more or less)

It's probably my French heritage leaking out, but I have been pronouncing it with a soft g... sounding like it starts with a j. "jest-AWLT". Guess that's wrong, then?

As a German, I can say with 100% certainty that it's "officially" pronounced "Gee-shtult" ("e" as in "bed", "u" as in "but"), although your everyday German would rather pronounce it "gashtullt" (with a less emphasized and more "blurred" first syllable).

Your explaination takes all the fun out of barking the word. (German words are very barkable, just try and bark 'bartwurst' a few times.)

This is sort of what I was getting at with g(uh)-shtält'; but I didn't really know how to write out the more blurred first syllable part.

Although, I'm not an everyday German. ;)

Funny aside: I used to work with a bunch of Germans, I guess most could be described as "everyday" - but one was from old German nobility. I think he would do things like use the first pronounciation as a subtle way of reminding the others of his "rank."

The term "gestalt" also refers to the combination of many different mindsets into one big brain. All of the personalities of the individual cominbers would merge and become either a perfectly oiled machine--like the Predacons and Predaking--or not so well-oiled--like the Combaticons and Bruticus. Of course, the worst-case scenario would probably be something akin to multiple-personality disorder--like Menasor and the constant mental bickering between the Stunticons.

See, it pays to stay awake in Psych class. :thumb

the term gestalt is as strikeback said, but the mindset will have more than then sum of it's parts, say for instance if the team has malliace it shall be multipied several times over and this applies to other emotions as well

i heard the term used on red dwarf episode 'Leigon and krten prenounced it geh-stal-t

Speaking of, the term "Seeker" is now to be considered semi-official, sicne Furman used in in War Within vol. 1 #1. :tfevil
