Figure buying

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.

I've got a bit of a problem here. My mom is kind of mad at me. She scolds me on how I don't seem to save any money, but she understands that collecting TFs is an important hobby to me.

So here's the issue. I just spend $42.97 on both Bulkhead and Downshift from BBTS. Now my mom wrote something along the lines of this:

DAMN YOU. You don't seem to learn that money doesn't grow on trees. It just burns a hole right in your pocket. You spend it before you even have it. With Chanukah starting next Tuesday, I'm very dissapointed in you. It's stupid.

I'm not quoting it exactly, but that's the basic gist of it. I feel sorry, but I don't want to stop collecting. I was thinking of going on a self-promise and not making any purchases for the rest of the month, with the possible exception if somebody finds a Mirage figure. But that's it.

I need some suggestion and help to make my mom happy.

I tell ya, it's really sad and dissapointing. I've already hung up my checkbook for a while though.

Do extra chores, get a paperroute, ya name it, earn some money to make up for your expendures.

Well. I already have a job. Doing some extra chores doesn't sound too hard. With my mom going to the hospital tomorrow, my youngest sister is getting surgury for God knows what now, maybe it'll give me a chance to brush up on some stuff and get back on her good side. But I'm not doing a paper route. I'm not getting up any earlier than I have to, and I have to get up pretty early just to make sure I have enough time to do my morning routine and still get to school on time.

wha? its your job, its your money. NO ONE HAS A SAYING ON HOW YOU SHOULD SPEND IT. Maybe some counseling on how to save for dah future, but if you want something and you have the money, just go get it, period. That is after you pay the bills, food, clothes, etc.

That's exactly what my mom is trying to teach me. I already have to put half of what I earn into savings. So that's that. But you're right, if I have the money, why shouldn't I buy something. The problem is, is that if this becomes a permanant habit, then I won't have any money for important things like food, bills, and other stuff. I have to stop spending money before I even have it.

You have to learn when to buy and when not. Example: I usually buy any single transformer i see, even repaints. Im what u call a completist. The kind of collector who doesn't even care bout the price, if its there i gotta have it.

It's been two months now since my wife stopped working due to an accident, she hurt her back badly. Now im paying our 2 cars, house, food, clothes, etc. And there's a lot of stuff I want to buy now : (Predaking, energon combiners;) but there are priorities that come first ALWAYS. I still buy but in a more controlled manner Before the accident I used to buy almost daily, now i check my wallet, think of what needs to be done first, if any money' left then i buy something for me as long as it doesnt hurt in dah pocket.

The Morale here is learn how to use your money, you can still buy but in a more conservative fashion.

Parents don't exactly see TFs as a worthwhile investment of your cash. I know mine don't. I've had a steady job with the UK govt for the last three years to finance my Tf habit, saved enough to do my postgrad degree and yet they still don't get it... and I wouldn't expect them to, it's a personal thing.

If TFs are the only thing you're spending your money on, even if you're saving, that's a pretty fair reaction from your Mother. Anyway, to avoid driving your parents nuts, save some cash for the holiday season and then blow it all in the New Year sales... at least that way you can try and justify it by saying they were bargains!!!

Not abad idea. Although my holiday, Chanukah, starts on the 7th. I'm done with my holiday shopping. But I'm expecting a few TFs for the holiday. Then maybe, with gift card and gift certificates I'm bound and likely to get, and whatever money I have saved up from work, maybe I'll go on a TF New Year's sales splurge. Hopefully, my mom will be calmed down by then. What I like about my dad is that he's easy to talk to. He doesn't raise his voice that often and is more or less my external form of a conscience. So maybe with him, I might be able to do that and still get away with the "bargains" argument.

Another tactic you probably need to learn is the 'sneaking things into the house after the shopping trip'.

My Grandfather always thought he was the best at this, but my Grandmother could always tell when he had something new as he went up the back stairs as opposed to going and saying hello.

It's pretty easy to sneak a basic or deluxe thing in in your bag anyway, and I'm sure your parents don't pay enough attention to your collection to notice the odd small figure appearing here and there ;-)

Just buy the ones you really like and for the repaints just by one version.
