Ravage the Insult Comic Bot @ BotCon '11

Recommended Posts

Ravage was a huge hit at BotCon. Special thanks to EnclineDesigns and Axeman for helping me create this character. He has his own channel now @ http://youtube.com/ravagetheinsultcomic

Needs a thicker Russian accent, otherwise it's a great idea!

Triumph is better IMO. :/ Although the idea of adapting Ravage as the Transformers equivalent of Triumph is interesting and can work well.

Some tips:

+ The puppeteer is almost always in the shot! He should be crouching out of the way at least to avoid accidentally getting in the shot.

+ Make a more complete puppet. Give it an upper body and not just a head - even if the front legs just dangle uselessly, much like Triumph's.

+ Consider making the puppet out of latex - yeah I know it's a robot, but latex may look and move better -- and still look mechanical. After all, the Robocop costume was made of latex, and cosplayers often make armour out of latex.

+ No need to include a cigar... you don't want to rip off Triumph that much.

+ Insult people! For a so-called insult comic bot, Ravage sure isn't doing that much insulting! :P (calling a bunch of sleeping guys "losers" isn't that much of an insult).

+ Since Ravage is a Transformer, maybe have some of the insults based on Transformers stuff. Like at the end when that guy called out "A Time Lord!" - that was an opportunity to maybe throw in a few Doctor Who-Transformers jabs (yes, the Doctor did cross over into the Transformers' universe once ;) re: "Crossroads of Time" (DWM))

For anyone not familiar with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, I think this was one of his shining moments:

:)

Thanks for the tips. The body is being made. There were a lot truly "insult" moments but the camera wasn't recording. The point wasn't to get kicked out of BotCon. It was the first time I've had to perform with a puppet live. I have a lot of experience in puppetry but it was all behind a stage. I recently had surgery on my leg that kept me from crouching down. The cameraman wasn't very good at keeping me out of the shot either. It was a first experience and we have a lot of things to improve on. BotCon is generally a more family-friendly place so we tried to keep it PG but he was supposed to be completely cut loose and uncensored at Comic-Con and I had to cancel my trip for personal reasons. I plan on letting him loose once again at Dragon*Con and we'll see if we can't do a better job.

I understand why he wasn't more insulting and it's fine staying a little more PG. I look forward to watching more as you do them.

Yeah and no cigar. Smoking isn't classy anymore lol. Especially for robots. I guess unless they were making fun of feeble human lungs.

Perhaps a different comedic approach may be more appropriate if you want to keep this character kid-friendly? Not sure if insult humour is entirely appropriate for kiddies (because a lot of young children don't understand sarcasm (especially dead pan sarcasm) and take things at face value) <shrug>

At the con though, I generally spoke with older friends that were fans or friends. I didn't speak to any young children. I messed with a few parents though. :) I found a nice balance between really insulting and adult humor and tame mild comedy depending on who I was talking to... just wished I had recorded more of it so you guys could see for yourselves. :)
