Review: DOTM Voyager Optimus Prime Figure

Recommended Posts

I am really, REALLY disappointed by this review...and I have to wholeheartedly (but respectfully, of course) disagree with your assessment, and I'll tell you why: I never liked any of the movie Primes released by Hasbro until this one, even the "movie accurate" voyager Battle Blades one from ROTF, because they never portrayed the appropriate bulk and, let's be honest, wonky proportions of Prime in the hands of Bay; this one has it in spades. Even with the gaps in the alt mode, you gotta appreciate the engineering that went into the design - far better than the 'robo-vision' version that was damn near a shell-former. I have a bad feeling that you're going to be super-harsh on any new releases of old characters, simply because you already have a preconceived notion of what they should be like, but I gotta tell you - I bought none of the previous movie toys because they just never looked (or possibly, felt) right; these new toys seem to have somehow captured the right look and feel, even if they aren't totally accurate.

That said, Blitz-Wing, I love your reviews - keep up the good work, we really appreciate it!

So far, I've looked at Leader BB and Voyager Prime. I try to stay subjective when looking at updates, retools or remolds. As was hinted in the review, if Hasbro goes through the trouble of making an updated or new mold for an existing character, it should be an improvement. The alt mode has taken several steps backwards which, to me, is just unacceptable. You make a point that the robot mode may be more accurate to the Bayverse design, but (in my opinion), it's still malproportioned. There's too much falsework and too much kibble for me to take it seriously. Sure, Robovision had it's kibble too, but it was a much cleaner package to me.

Here's hoping the other existing character remolds fare better :beer

I don't like the Movie OP because I don't like the Peterbuilt Semi body for him, I like the Mack Semi body style. Always have always will. :ohyeah

That aside, I actually found myself liking this one better than some of the other Voyager ones as well. I am only comparing Voyager to Voyager molds, so LC doesn't count IMO when I make this assessment.

It is funny to me that the Weapon that he comes with [ MECHTECH ] is what made me actually look at the figure, which I am annoyed with. I only bought the ROTF Voyager OP with the huge backpack, so I like this one. I never bought the Voyager HFTD OP, so I'm not sure how this one stands up next to that one. He doesn't come with a Matrix of Leadership like the BB OP so I have to say that is a step backwards.

I actually like his Bot mode, and the shoulder "kibble" to me make him look Badder. I like it and I actually might get him. While I hate the "gimmick" of the MechTech, some are nice. I just wish there was a place to put the cannon instead of attaching to the side and it being this huge TUMOR on the side of the figure.

One thing I will say about these figures is that the seem to be almost bare when it comes to paint apps. I wonder if that's why they can sell them for cheaper than the previous voyagers. :shrug

Did you do a review of DOTM Deluxe SS?

Thanks again for your reviews, they are helpful for me to decide if I even want to look for a figure. :D

Blitz, I used to enjoy your reviews, but now,,, They are just to sloppy and lazy. I think TFormers should head a NEW head reviewer now, am sorry man but YOU have lost your taste in reviews

You haven't been around long enough one way or the other. The new system will take some getting used to but the reviews themselves are as good as ever if not better.

If there's something in particular that you find critical about the new system, feel free to PM me. Though your conclusion is a bit harsh, I'm still open to know where you think I went south.

I take it back. FIRST;its not you its the system that dissapoints me (sorry should had seen that, I eat my insults) I just feel its a bit complicated. look at the old reviews and its like we got straight to the point Robot, transformation, vehicle. now the whole other stuff is a it well confusing and well meh. Maybe if TFormers HAD added a "size comparison" section and how well the figure fits with the line. I know you got the measurements, but there is nothing like a picture with well something that everyone has or something, am I clear?? (like comparing every figure with an 07 bumblebee because I am sure everyone has one), and if it blends with the rest of the line or if its just not meant for the universe of the figure reviewed. One thing thats pretty well, ummm plain now is the articulation foto, its a small complain but back in the day you pulled some pretty neat posses to show off the figure, NOW well look at skyhammer articulation picture,,, he is just standing there, I am sure I would not display him like that.

But thats just my opinion, I will still continue to read your reviews but well unfortunately with not the same excitement :(

Again, I eat my insults, my complain is aimed at the "new system"

No problem. Some people have complained that I don't put enough info in and that my scoring system in the past was a bit too simple. I'm still trying to tweak it (as you'll see tomorrow when I do the next round of reviews) but it will take a couple of attempts to get it the way I want it. As for the posing, I did mention that my Skyhammer was curiously loose. I would have liked to do some better poses, but the joints were way too floppy. I'm hoping that when I eventually exchange Skyhammer for one that has all 4 rotors, the joints will be nice and tight. Otherwise, I might regret the 9 I gave him.

I'll tweak with my format as I take breaks from updating the galleries and see if I can 'clean' it up a bit...

this figure is terrible compared to the cgi model.. that's the whole point of a toyline.. to give you a physical interpretation of what you're seeing on the screen. .. we have a preconceived notion of what they should be like.. because in the movie we see what they should be like..

how does something capture the look and feel of a character with being less accurate than previous molds? that doesn't quite make sense. and how are you in a position to judge the look and feel of a figure that you don't have? it's obvious you don't have leader prime.. if you did, you'd know how high the bar has been set for a movie prime.

i disagree with your assessment of the purpose of the toyline. yeah, hes not a perfect replica of the CGI model, but it is a toy. if you look back through the 70's and 80's at chogokin and super robot toys, they all had crazy colors, firing fists, missiles, propellers and other gimmicks that the original robot from the show didnt have, yet they were awesome toys. not to say that toys shouldn't represent the character, but we already have the difinitive version of prime, the '09 Leader and to a lesser extent the '10 voyager. while this toy does have solar panels and weird details, he does capture the feel of the character, specifically the longer legs, a detail most toys omit.

Blitz, I've always been a fan of your reviews, a well written and illustrated review such as yours is much prefferable to sitting through someone futzing through a transformation in a video; however, I have some constructive criticizm:

the Realism category i think shouldnt factor into the final score. i think it should be definitely kept because your opinion on the topic is part of the reason we read these things, but i dont think it should have any sway over the fundamental issues like how well executed the engineering is, poseability, or how appropriate and well executed the paint has been applied. It basically means every class aside from HA Leader or Alternator is going to have a default point deduction just for being a lower price point.

aside from that, i really like the addition of play/price ratio! kudos on that idea, as this is really an expensive hobby and any way i can be dissuaded from buying something that really is a dud is much appreciated.

You've always done this, but i find it fun and informative when you tell us what the alt mode is based on. Besides the movie figures (where most vehicles can be purchased from a dealer near you!) do you do research on the alt modes or do you just have a vast store of knowledge?
