Why doesn't Hasbro have dircet to DVD TF movies?

Recommended Posts

non collectors may make up 70% but they rotate thru and don't always stick with it

Neither do a good number of adult collectors, it seems, judging by how many state their passionate disgust and disdain for the Movies, Animated, or anything else that doesn't fit what they think Transformers should be.

Fortunately, there's enough diversity in Transformers product nowadays to give a bit of something to almost everyone. But I can imagine how frustrated the "mature collectors" must have been some 10 years ago, when they may have had only one choice of Transformer toyline to pick from.

We make up 30 percent? Gosh, that means children still make up the other 70 percent.

30% is actually quite a bit, and as Hasbro knows now, NOT to be taken lightly.

Hasbro has every right to go after the adult collector market if they can. But 30 percent is still a lot less than the children/casual buyers who make up the other 70 percent. That's why we have Power Core Combiners, Gravitybots and Robot Powered Machines. If, heaven forbid, the economy gets a lot worse, does Hasbro try to further cultivate this alleged 30 percent adult market, and hope the kids/casual buyers get roped in anyway? Or, do they opt to dump that adult market in favor of the more profitable 70 percent, and hope the adult collectors will buy their toys anyway?

Also, of this 30 percent demographic...how many would actually pay money to buy Transformers media (movies, comics, etc), rather than just getting them off the Interwebs?

I would, im sure alot of fans here would. I bet you wouldnt be able to GET it online (yanked off youtube yada yada) if it was out @ retail. JUST cuz we were lucky enough to get all the eps of Animated online doesnt mean most shows get as lucky. Venture Bros, Clone Wars, alot of other properties were taken off youtube for infringement. I have a feeling the hubs shows will be the same.

There's always a way to find content online.

The fandom condemns any Transformer franchise as garbage because they don't find the aesthetics appealing. If Hasbro does put out some direct to video, mature cartoon, but uses some art style which gets a huge negative reaction from the adult fans, then what?

Most likley if they were appealing to adults, they know what "Aesthetic" we would enjoy on average. ;)

They could always go for an avant garde approach, like a continuation of Beast Machines.

I've always wanted direct to video movies (OVA's) in US TF. However, I'm pretty excepting that they would be directly tied to something the kids would be interested in buying first. Something related to the current main series or whatever. Hasbro is out to make money and if they did do direct to video flicks, it would probably target the audience that brings them in the most money.

That being said, regardless of the target age of the video, I would just hope it would be good. However with the Hub, I'd expect tv movies made for it and on demand instead of dvd releases of mainstream properties.

well, here's an easier thing for hasbro to do. use the universe line of toys for the dvd's. something... anything that does not have bay written all over it and teenagers running around saving the world.

use war for cybertron then... it has a game that is very popular... has a toy line blah blah blah.

Agree whole heatedly. And I think I know a storyline to drive the OVAs: The IDW stories. They have the asthetic of G1, retain the designs and personalities of the bots, they just put them in a new universe outside the G1 continuity while still nodding to it for inspiration. War Within spliced with a few flashbacks from Megatron: Origins would be a nice starting point. If we could get the rest of the stories in a cohesive, organized flow that would be a great. I really want to see this happen.

As for the 30 vs 70 percent, my perspective is different. I do not see kids or parents buying these Transformers toys at all save around Christmas. The rest of the time it is me or other collectors or known scalpers in those aisles. Hasbro can't really shrug us off cuz we are the constant buyers the rest of the year. The kids get the toys for their birthdays and Christmas and that is it til next year while we actively hunt and buy the new waves each two-three months.

No way dude, kids totally buy more than fans. It's just nice that toys that would interest us more are made, really nice.

With what income? The parents buy the toys for the kids, and it is not as frequently as the collectors do.

Tell ya what, go into your local Toys R Us this weekend and see how many kids compared to adults are getting toys bought for them. More toys are bought for children than what adults buy for themselves.

GI JOE Resolute was almost the best thing to happen to the franchise cartoonwise. Reminds me of the wicked first Clone Wars series.

I'm buffled as to why Has doesn't follow suit myself. Ultimately, with businesses it comes down to the bottomline...cash. If the see the money no question you will see some straight to dvds, not before. Resolute was also able to generate a limited toyline, so could a TF OVA.

Maybe they have to do like Joe and have them introduced as webisodes first to gauge interest.

I have and no kids were really there. Maybe 4 or five for the hour that I was there (waiting on my car to get fixed across the street).I did see maybe six adults saying they were buying for themselves. The first guy did get a Dirge and Blurr and after that i just saw the others looking intently for new figures.

I had another idea for the OVAs based on the IDW material. Theme songs could include the classic theme from Season two, the opening theme for the movie (substitute Unicron with Megatron since Unicron has yet to make an appearance), Stan Bush's "Til All Are One", and hell, include "The Touch"

Of course it can seem that adults are doing all the buying, but take a quick look at the advertising and marketing. There is a reason it's all towards children. They make up the majority of toy sales. If not, companies would market more toward adults. OP would have long stacks again and missiles wouldn't be lollipop sticks on the reissues. These companies spend MILLIONS in marketing and research, everything is calculated towards the target customer (where the money is coming from). This isn't a simple "I buy so many figures a month" thing, this is HARD data. This is facts. Sure a product may not sell so well, but there is a big reason as to why it's marketed the way it is. Because they want to make as much money as they can and plan to.

There's a big reason why Transformers Prime is coming on the new channel made for kids and families and not Spike or a channel made for adults.
