Computer porgram for Transformers

Recommended Posts

Any one know the type of computer or computer program Hasbro uses to make Transformers toys, or other hasbro products, and that if people like me have anyway of accessing it?

Um, Takara does the engineering, Hasbro does designs, which are drawn on paper. You'd probably want to look into some sort of 3D modeling software, if I'm understanding you correctly.

I haven't heard anything about what computer-wise Hasbro / Takara uses, but it seems Hasbro / Takara is pretty old fashion. Paper designs, and handsculpted prototypes.

I do know Lego uses Autodesk's Autocad in their design work, but they start the old fashion way by kitbashing parts to come up with prototype designs(at least, this was the case for Bionicle.)

Some smaller companies have foregone sculptors and are doing things completely digital, they're most likely using Autocad as well.

It's available to the public, but given it's a pretty major tool for the engineering / architecture crowd, you can expect a pretty major price tag; $1,000 and some change for LT, which only does 2D drawings, $3,000 to $4,600 for Autocad, which does both 2D and 3D drawings. However, if you have access to educational discounts, you can snag the software for around $400 to $500 (Maybe, this was the pricing back in 2008. The non-educational prices are current.).

they use 3d modeling programs.... such as autocad "mentioned above", MAYA, and ect.

As for getting your creation made... you need to find a company that does 3d printing, shapeways is one of the most well known. http://www.shapeways.com/

Luckily they also have a list of all the supported 3d modeling programs here, http://www.shapeways.com/tutorials/supported-applications

Just a warning... this whole thing isn't exactly cheap, especially if its a large scale item. You can get a good idea by browsing around in the shapeways shop.

Interesting information, thanks to all! Just one last thing, does anyone know the name of the engineering program that Takara uses that robo_rob was talking about?

I wasn't talking about a program, I was talking about Takara doing the engineering. However they engineer, seems to be old school, but I figure some sort of 3d modeling program is used. Auto cad mayhaps?

Auto cad? Really? Funny. I'm using that program now in school. It looks too simple to be making all of these plastic thingabobs we call Transformers. Then again, I am a person who would naturally over complicate things. :D Maybe that why I like Transformers. :schin

*shrug* They use it in industrial design. Toys fall into that category.

Well then, that's all the information I need. thanks to all, especially you robo_rob. You just made my school project a whole lot easier. Thanks.
