Did you ever make your own Transformer toys as a kid?

Recommended Posts

Both my brother and I had to get creative when it came to Transformer toys we wanted when we were kids. We weren't poor growing up, but our parents wouldn't buy us every single Transformer toy that we wanted...as we wanted them all. LOL! So we made our own out of Legos. We used to come up with some pretty creative Transformer toys including the Dinobots, Stunticons that actually combined to Menasor (until we got the real toys), Aerialbots and even Megatron and Optimus Prime. Ahhh....to be a kid again where imagination and creativity ran rampant in ones' mind. They weren't Hasbro quality representations of the toys, but we did pretty darn well with what we had. Oh yeah, we also made a pretty kick-ass Unicron out of shoe boxes that stood about 2' tall after we saw him in the 1986 Transformers' movie.

Anyhow, did anyone else use their creativity to create Transformer toys using any material that they had lying around the house back when you were a kid?

I always loved building things.

I never really made TFs but I had these things called Construx

I had 3 huge carry cases filled with these and the motor :mwahaha

I never followed what the box said to make but I'd build cars, small robots, jets, towers, all sorts of things.

What I use to love making the most were these 3ft robots. I'd spend days building solid joint reenforcements, and usind different pieces to give the look of a detailed interior, and with the help of that motor and a ton of rubberbands, string, and washers, I'd get them to walk and rais their arms.

I use to love seeing what parts were weak and doing quick fixes then once I got the robot just right. I'd take it down and start a new one all over again.

I bought a huge lot of them a few years ago off ebay for cheap. My old apartment had a better TF room, and I made a little cybertron city with bridges, repairbays, even a expanded base for Fort Max that could spin the big guy 360 in base mode.

Sadly those are packed away for now :(

I also only had small number of TF's growing up, but the ones I had were played with almost every day. I had a ton of legos (mainly hand-me-downs from my older siblings) and I would try to make TF's out of those.

Oh man, construx were awesome, I had that set in the ad. :)

Man, I remember when everyone wore sweaters and had lame haircuts, too!

Never made myown but did go nuts with permanent markers on the details.. Probably 30% of my hate towards those who "pannel line" their high detail models then make em look like they are either cartoons or filled with mould..

Only had a handful of G1 as a kid (my family WAS poor) but there were alot of kids on my block so we mixed and matched. Somehow ended up with a G1 Jetfire... forgot what I traded him for. TF was a big thing on the block, but so was MASK. I ended up with a Switchblade... how I loved that thing.

As far as making my own? Not at all, my motor skills were crap :lol

^ Bull, what kid in his right mind would trade away G1 Jetfire? Even today, compared to more modern figures, that's an outstanding figure.

Damn.....i was gonna bring up construx but Leige you beat me to it. Construx pretty much ruled my world for a little while. I built everything out of construx including TF's. I remember making a Shockwave outta construx.

One of my crowning achievements ,i thought , was i had made Liono's claw glove from the Thundercats. Fuck did i love that thing!!!. I'd put that on my arm and i felt invincible and pretty proud of myself too cause nobody had a Liono glove.

I had Shockwave for a while, I got it in a trade then traded it again.

Hey, kids are stupid, especialy back then when the idea of these being more then just toys was a silly notion.

I made big blocky non-transforming robots out of Legos when I was a kid. Even had a place to put a mini-figure in them as a pilot. Kinda like the original Diaclone figures had with the place for a pilot to sit. Oh how I wish the Diaclone concept would be used again... wait never mind. I do remember Construx too! Those were great toys as well Liege!

As for the trading off of figures, it never happened on my block growing up. I was the only kid on the block who was into that stuff. So what was mine was mine and that was fine by me.
