Where Does A 200 Ton Combiner Play? Wherever it wants.

Recommended Posts

This recent article at Kotaku.com asserts that playing a Combiner in a Video Game would be akin to like playing call of duty, but you would only control a leg. Combiner play will evidently not be a component of War for Cybertron multi-player, though in the aforementioned article says lead developer, Matt Tieger, and his team considered it. The author goes on to speculate that this means the concept is untenable.

As is my custom, I call BS.

I'm betting it's a mix of not having a solid idea of how they thought it would work out combined with a resource issue (budget/time constraints).

I'm betting it's a mix of not having a solid idea of how they thought it would work out combined with a resource issue (budget/time constraints).

I don't mean for THIS game. I was speaking more to the concept.

The concept itself is interesting. I could see playing as an individual component of a combiner but wouldn't that get tedious in co-op mode. I just have a hard time seeing five people get that coordinated. Maybe if you could stop time RPG-style to predetermine at leaset a common destination with others and then just work the offensive and defensive capabilities along the way it could be feasible.

I think you should have to work together, like 1 leg would control movement, and the other would control lower torso skills, such as kicking, boosting, jumping, ducking, ext.. And for the arms, they would both control 1 arm, and then the torso would control looking, upper torso skills, flying[if capable], and torso weapons like shoulder mounted guns and such.

It is an interesting gameplay idea, I mean in plenty of war games online one player can control the movement of a tank while other players man the tank's various weapons which could work for the combiners in the game...if only. Who knows, maybe there will be an online multiplayer gametype where you can play as the larger characters like Omega Supreme, the Combiners and Tyripticon, it would be cool but it probably won't happen. :tfsad

Lastly did the article just confirm the Constructicons as playable characters?

I'm sorry, but playing as a team controlling individual legs walking just doesn't sound fun to me. Maybe if it became some multiplayer rail shooter at that point I'd be more behind it.

I don't think it would not be fun to play a giant foot crushing everything in it's path, I do however think that in the case of the 5 piece combiners like Superion or Menasor etc. that whoever is playing the main bot should be in control of everything and the component legs and arms people would then have to do something to maintain combination and keep a sort of Special Move going. It would be similar to getting a nuke in Call of Duty MW2. You don't see it that often because not everyone can do it. I've only seen my roommate pull it off three or four times and it has never happened while I've been playing, not by me and not to me. Never-the-less, I really think that it could be done and definitely give a WOW factor to a multiplayer game.

Personally, I think the whole idea of playing a gestalt character as a team would be tedious! This is my own perception of course, but I've always viewed the team as becoming one collective mind once they are joined. I suppose they could reactivate and detach when needed, but generally are united as one mind. So with that, I wouldn't even want to play a gestalt as a team after merging, but as one player controlling one massive robot. Again, that's just my personal take on it.

Why would you play a leg? The combiners full gestalt would have its own new mind completely. It would just be like changing charachtor, something Fighting games have had going for at least 8 years. Sounds more like laziness on the developers side.
