War Within and "pre-earth mode" TF figures

Recommended Posts

Okay, so you've got the bulk of the 6" Titanium line: WW Skywarp, Starscream, Thundercracker, Optimus, Megatron, Magnus, Sunstorm, Thrust, Fallen, Grimlock, Prowl, and Jetfire. Then there were the "War Within Series" "Battle Beneath the Streets" Universe Target-exclusive 2-pack with WW-inspired repaints of Springer and Ratbat. Now, those figures weren't really designed with WW in mind, but they were repainted to match the comic designs as closely as possible and specifically marketed that way.

The only other ones that come to mind are the different versions of the Cybertron Starscream mold, which was obviously based on the WW seeker design (which I believe had 3 or 4 repaints, plus the Leader version), and Classics Jetfire, which was the same design as the one used in the Stormbringer comics...

So is that everything? Or is there something I've forgotten?

I think you listed all the current WW toys out there.

I like that they made some comic style figures, I wouldn't mind some more. I'd be very intrested in a HoS subline. The Knight Morpher is due out any time now, but I wouldn't mind all the rest.

Classics Jetfire, which was the same design as the one used in the Stormbringer comics...

The deal with Jetfire/Skyfire and the other "comic" figures, are this. The artists have Hasbro send them early un released figures waaaaay before we ever get to see them. Half or (maybe even most) of the figures are drawn FROM toys they look at. Read interviews with Don Figeroa and ... well his name skips my mind but he did "Devastation". Jetfire was a toy before they drew him up. Dons design i believe. And in Devastation, before we even got to see a GLIMPSE of Universe Prowl, hes in there just as he is in toy. In SOME cases they make up the designs, and they are not toys, but from what i read, hasbro sends the toys to the artists early so they can draw them "correctly".

If im right, the new gas tanks for thighs Optimus Prime will be a toy in the near future. He is drawn the EXACT same all the time lately (other then covers or drawn in a more G1 esque way, depending on artists). The only thing thats changed is his wheels facing the front, or the back of his lower legs. Which could easily have been a change in poroduction with a slide transformation.

NOW from what i believe Drift (assuming he ever makes it as a toy) is the opposite. Anyways, i think you covered all the WW figures correctly. :D

Point being, just cuz a transformer looks like it was taken from the comics, doesn't mean it was. Im ONLY mentioning this cuz Jetfire was a toy short before drawn in Stormbringer. Im arguing nothing else you say ...hope im clear & u dont misunderstand :S

No, it's all good. I honestly wasn't sure about putting Stormbringer Jetfire on there because I haven't read the comics yet, so I really don't know much about him. What era was that even supposed to be set in? The pics I've seen all looked like WW/Cybertronian designs, but I wasn't sure how the Stormbringer comics fit in with the DW War Within stuff, if it even does.

I mainly just wanted to put together a comprehensive list because I decided to collect all the pre-earth/WW-design G1 figs I could find, and I didn't want to leave any out. So far I've got all but Titanium Sunstorm and the Target Ratbat/Springer 2-pack.

I wish they redid the Titanium WW figures in all plastic. Titanium WW Prime was nice except that he was bottom heavy. Even the GI Joe Megatron would have been an ok figure, if it was in all plastic.

My only problem with the Titanium line was that it ended outside of the occasional token repaint.

Sure especialy early on there were some crap figures, and this being the internet is the usual point of focus. In the line up though where some very well thought out detailed figures as well. For the first time ever we had a single piece(save for the weapons) Ultra Magnus, a non-spychanger RID Optimus, and Rodimus Prime.

People can keep dragging the line down with the usual drivil about GIJoe Megatron, and Soundwave in a diaper, but I'm looking at the Tetrajets, Scourge, The Fallen, the bots mentioned above, and all the other awesome figures that a subline belted out.

I'm just gonna go on as saying, Bisons Fan, none of that is pointed at you. I'm just venting about the usual attitude towards the line in general.

I had thought of this before, and if you wanted to start a "War Within" figure set you could technically include a couple of the G1 toys that were seen in War Within. For instance Topspin, Twin Twist, Shockwave and Bugly (without his pretender shell) all appeared in War Within. You could probably infer that the Technobots looked exactly the way they do now too. So that's 9 more figures for a War Within collection.

Oh I agree with you completely. There we some gems to be found in the Titanium line. As I said though, these gems would have probably been better off if they were done in all plastic instead. A figure like the GI Joe Megatron, I have to admit, is a guilty pleasure of mine. In altmode, the little guy is solid and looks really good. Its just the diecast parts that make him a FAIL in robot mode because of the weight against the plastic. If these figures were redone in ALL Plastic as a part of the Universe line then many would probably come to like most of these figures that were originally passed over. My favorite Titanium figures are Scourge (who hangs out with my Universe Galvatron and Cyclonus) and Rodimus Prime (who doesn't have skinny legs anymore). From an engineering standpoint, many of these figures were a great achievement (Diaper Soundwave even), I just wish they were re-introduced as "Transformers Plastics" in the Universe line. I never had a chance to get the Tetrajets due to passing them over but I am indeed regretting the fact. There were a lot of gems in this line, unfortunately many of them were passed over due to the bad reviews they got because of the diecast parts being too heavy. It was one of my favorite lines of the past few years, Classics/Universe being the other.

Bolded for empathsis. I couldn't agree with this more. Titaniums proved for once and for all that diecast is a lost art for a reason, because it hinders the toy something fierce. While there were some stinkers in the line, but there were some really cool figs as well (Scourge and Rodimus being my two favorites). I would have liked them more if they weren't held back by the metal though. I suspect if that extra money had been used elsewhere they probably could have cleaned up a few of the flaws a lot of them had.

I don't have balance problems with mine. Some are disproportionate in weight though and the conflicting materials didn't help.

-The use of rubber parts even on plastic Transformers is a bad idea in my book-

I will agree though, die-cast is a lost art. That is a truely sad fact. I love that die-cast came back for a while but they didn't do it right. Every die-cast figure that I have around their size uses the material sparingly. It isn't untill you get into larger figures where huge chunk sections where used, ie, Jetfire, MP Prime.

I myself, again being a fan of the Titanium line would love to see a second attempt at the line with new figures. If they refine the material use, I do believe they can do much better, not that they really did bad in the first place.

That right there brings me to a large belief about all of Hasbro's Titanium figures. When I think of the early Marvel and Star Wars pieces, the figures came in display packages, sometimes even with domes inside the box. I honestly believe that Hasbro, when making these was trying to market and engineer a new collectors line, and didn't actualy think we'd open these.

I know that sounds rediculious, but think about the QC issues in the early pieces, why would they let that go(not that Hasbro is renouned for QC, but still). I honestly believe they where going for simple display, not play products. The use of Comic characters is just evidence that this line was made with the collector not the kids in mind.

Little did they know, we play too :P
