Mampy's ROTF Optimus Prime! by mampy

That's damned pretty. I'll never get why they go to the trouble of remaking a more exact almost perfect mold..Then go cheap on the paint..It just defeats the point of it. I mean to not even add the copper that they actually have on both Leader versions, regular and Premium, it's stupid. Nicely done on yours though. Although I'd have left the windows clear.

I just took a look at this and the windows aren't painted opaque black. They look like they were darkened using "Smoke" colored acrylic clear coat. I've used it myself a lot. You can still see the detailing behind them. I wouldn't have painted the optics though.

It does look good. I'll give him that. Great job.

This is the most pimped out thing I have ever seen. I didn't want to buy this model till I saw how good it could look with a nice paint job! nice hands and gun too and I like the darker windows. :tfsad

Thanks guys! I'm glad you like it. Thanks for the feedback as well. :)

I agree. There is so much detail on this mold that just doesn't pop out visually because of the lack of paint. Well, I suppose they had to sacrifice paint apps to make up for the costs of the improved engineering compared to the first Leader Prime (plus, it's taller than the first one as well).

Yup, It was my first time to use smoke gray. I wanted to just sort of give it a medium tint and have some of the detail behind them visible. It had the effect I wanted when I was painting the windows but came out a little too dark when I reattached the chest pieces. Forgot to account for the lack of light when you put it back. Oh well.

I also initially wanted to leave the eyes unpainted and install blue LEDs, but with my lack of experience in that sort of thing I just opted to paint them. :)

Thanks. Paint or no paint, you should get it. It's the best Transformer ever released yet IMO, especially when you consider the CGI model that the toy is supposed to represent. :)

Awesome, I would love a recipe for the gun.

Thanks! I made a tutorial for the weapon mods, here's a snippet of the one for the gun...

Custom Gun

The gun is basically TFTM '07 LC Prime's gun, with the following kibble:

- Barrel made from the plastic body of a ballpoint pen. Just find one that fits into the existing barrel.

- TFTM LC OP mini - gun kibble that pops out when you flip the gun over his hand, and one of those cylindrical truck thingies.

- TFTM VC OP shoulder joint assembly(to connect gun to the magnet on his forearm), tip of his missiles, the lower part of his smokestacks (as scope), and assembly connecting his smokestacks to the rest of his cannons (as holder for the fuel cylinder/whatever you call it sticking out of the top of my custom gun). These parts are encircled green in the pic below:

I then added two rare earth magnets to help Prime hold up the gun, as shown in the pic below.

- one inside the gun which attaches to the pin on the bottom of TFTM '07 Prime's articulated hands

- another to attach to the magnet on his forearm (from the removable sword mod)

Very very nice.

Would spray painting work on TFormer Toys? I used to brush paint all of mine but in time and through playing wiht them, they got sticky and what not.

So im thinking of spray painting them and useing clear gloss so it doesnt chip.

Very Paint Though. :] Makes it a step closer to the movie then it already is. :yay

Try using acrylic model paints. That should stop the stickiness. I would also recommend trying an airbrush. I use one when I can, particularly for larger projects.

I agree with Tramp. Use acrylics and paint in multiple thin coats. This should allow your paint job to cure better. This applies to whether you use sprays, airbrushes, or a paintbrush. I personally apply primer and some basecoats using a spraycan then I use an airbrush for the primary colors, weathering, and details. And yes, definitely apply clear coat. TFs have so many moving and rubbing parts that it is an absolute necessity. Sanding down rub areas helps a lot as well.
