Wildman is overrated...

Don Figueroa constantly amazes me with the amount of expression he crams into the perspective on the robots. They look dramatic, yet not disfigured and perfectly natural. I think his art is the best thing to happen to TF comics in years.

while there are problems with the actrual pencils i think the biggest problem with the image that started this thread is the inking and colouring. both are rather amaturish and lazy. the ink work is just simple tracing of lines with very little overall variation in line width. that is NOT inking that's tracing gosh darnit. the colouring while adequate is nothing special, they are far too flat considering how overly simplistic the line work is. also all the "glow" effects are absolutly atrocious. it looks like they just added a "outer glow" effect to the coloured area insted of actrually painting the glow in PS.

all that being said i am a fan of flater colours with more reliance on the inks and traditional physical shading medium (such as "zip-tone"). i also like the painterly computer shading you see in alot of modern books, i just feel that the flater colours of pre-90's comics should also have a place in the modern industry.

oh and soundwave DOES look a damn mess... he looks more like a toaster oven and less like a tape player. unless of course i am missing something story-wise and he hasn't been converted to be able to disguise yet.

edit:

dinobot50: that's exactly what i mean by the above statments on flater colours. i miss that look in comics. alot of todays comics are far too sterile and don't look like hand drawn art anymore.

pretty similar to Don's Prime. His is a dead ringer for 20th Prime.

no, Don's prime is like this one, this art comes from the TF: Generations book ;)

Back in September of 85, the team of William Johnson and Kyle Baker took over for a two issue run (#7 & #8). If they had been allowed to continue, I am sure that the art would have just gotten better.

The Johnson/Baker run:

true, I liked it very much myself, seeing this between the other artists at that time was like WOW

does anyone know why this artist only did 2 stories?

I dispice the Dreamwave art. That monstrosity isn't prime

this is.

That looks boring and too western style...Besides, you're like what...13? I doubt you know much about art...

This is the prementioned Mounstrocity... It looks more like a keeper than Prime

001a.jpg

they both look like Prime to me.

i'm not too fond of the artwork on that cover either. reminds me of the Invader Zim episode where Zim infects Dib with bologna and in turn Dib infects Zim back. those transformers look like the same thing has happened to them.
