I think the combiners can be done in a non-cheesy non-MMPR way. I can't imagine they'd go to all the trouble to have uber-realistic non-mass-shifting transformations for the individual bots and then suddenly have them break all the known laws of physics to combine a-la megazord/voltron/geewun/whatever.

...Although now I can't get the image of Hook shouting "And I'll form the head!" out of my erm... brain.

Here's my rough version of movie devastator. In my own style but you get the sense of scale and proportion... :tflaugh

Wow! That's one interesting knuckle-dragger! It's nice to see someone take some initiative, pick up a pen (or a mouse these days), and indulge everyone with some creativity...bravo, Sam!

While I see what you're after with the 'ape-like' appearance, I think the excavator & crane could stand alone as arms, and the smaller dumptruck & dozer could serve as leg extensions or feet, and give the overall design better humanoid proportions...just an opinion.

Hey thanks! It was fun to do -- still could spend a few hours on it finishing it up... I hear you on the humanoid proportions. That's certainly one way to go. Yeah the two big machines would make decent arms by themselves. The truth is, with the movie style transformations they can move the things around any old way they want.

I was basing my design on the news that Devastator would have massive upper body strength like a gorilla. I also liked Josh Nizzi's green Laung Haul concept -- and given the huge size of that vehicle plus my desire to add some G1-ness to him -- I chose that big green mass for the center -- and the sides of the dumpers made great simian pec shapes. The 2 huge vehicles made sense for shoulders and upper arms. Given the small size of the remaining small dump truck and the dozer, they wouldn't really increase his height substantially - unless they cheat it which they certainly can. Yes, making him taller would fit the G1 bill, but my goal was to kind of visually guess what they are going to do based on the leaks -- and the gorilla thing hit me hard. I actually think it makes him more monstrous, and less human. None of the Decepticons in movie 1 were human-like. Look how creature-like they treated Starscream and Bonecrusher... I believe that this guy will be 'the' big monster in TF2, so aping him up as much as possible was my approach.

Also I tried to link the arms with like-colors, so it wasn't too hodgepodge. Red to Red, and Yellow to Beige. I hope they give him purplish tech beneath the truck armor, to hint at G1. And given the widescreen aspect ratio, wider monsters fit the screen better.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I got so excited about this character being in an actual live action movie and once I heard about the vehicles my imagination exploded and I ran and painted this up. It's nice to hear you share my interest and excitement. Whatever they do, human or ape -- it's going to rock!!! i just hope that Mr. Bay slows the camera down and let's us enjoy some of the transformations and battles more than last time.

Actually if I just lengthen the green guy's legs ala Nizzi's Long Haul, it should give him more human proportions w/o losing the gorilla feel.

Great concept art! What program did you use?

Thanks dude!

I use Photoshop. Basically I throw down color with whatever brush and modulate the flow and opacity as needed. I've used painter in the past, but don't have it set up on my current mac.

Somehow, Devastator as a knuckle dragging tard makes sense.
