In answer to the masking tape question, I use Scotch Magic Tape. It's the kind that's made to be peeled off paper without ripping it up. The same kind of adhesive as Post It notes I'd guess. But I burnish it down on the model with the edge of a wooden toothpick to ensure there's no paint seepage. (Not the point of the toothpick, but the section where the cylindrical shaft curves into the conical end part. I hope that makes sense.)
