petition for galvatron reissiues

Recommended Posts

Speaking as someone who actually *owned* the toy, I can tell you that Galvatron had more articulation than most G1 Transformers. His arms could rotate and swing out at the shoulder, and they also bent at the elbows. B/c of his transformation, you could even swing his forearms in towards his body. His legs also bent at the hips and the knees. Let's see Ultra Magnus or Rodimus Prime (or Hot Rod) try that.

Having said that, I agree that it wouldn't be the same without the electronics. Nevertheless, he was a great figure, and was a far more imposing Decepticon leader than G1 Megatron. (Plus he could stand up on his own without falling apart...) BTW you also won't hear me complaining about "show accuracy" with this one. I liked his original color scheme, and it's a pity they screwed it up in TF:TM (as well as his head design), when so much of the rest of the cartoon design was spot-on.

Now, I can't tell you your opinion, but as someone who *OWNS* the toy currently and has it displayed in a glass case I'm afraid I have to disagree. He's pretty crappy.

I'll grant you that he has knee articulation, but he's so blocky and topheavy that he can barely use it and is forced to stand up straight when not flat on his back or transformed. He's got some ratcheting joints all up his arms, but... down from where his elbows begin, his forearms and hands look stupidly small in comparison with his MASSIVE upper arms. Sure he's got more articulation then those in his weight class and even most of the movie era, but the anatomy of this tyrant is enough to make all who stand before him die of laughter. Let's not forget that his lasery activation button is literally right over his "happy button" so his eyes light up.... as a "fortunate" coincidence? *shudder*

Then there's what he turns into... I thought it was a little silly to see megs turn into a puny squishy's pistol, but Galvy turns into a not so mobile cannon. I can't bear to display him like that. I mean as a matter of principle it's just not right to go from a sidearm to... this. There's a trigger in this mode so you're not fulfilling the tyrant's carnal pleasures as you fire on enemy forces and it's also a little easier to see the switch that changes the sounds he makes. They're pretty much all the same electronic "tweets" just with different repetative speeds and depths. Awful sounding rot, annoys legions of foes into immediate and unconditional surrender, or so I imagine.

I never cared about however cartoon accurate he was, he can stare down Metroplex and headbutt Super Fire Convoy. He's freakin' big. He's neat, but his alt mode is far from practical in terms of his rank and compared to say Energon Megs he's nothing short of a outdated relic. I love my Galvy, but were he ever to leave my collection I'd think long and hard before making any efforts to replace him. We need more reissue deceps, but I'd rather they didn't spend all those insane amounts of money rebuilding this particular mold and instead do something prudent like reissue the G2 Tank Megs to lead the Decepticons. Throw in some die cast parts and paint him up to resemble G1 megs, maybe make an arm cannon accessory. Snazzy. The movie era molds are pretty crappy as a general rule and unfortunately Galvatron was no exception, he was a darn sight better than Rodimus, but only because he was HUGE and offered up slightly more play value.

Learn your facts..Floro Dery designed all movie characters...it was the toy designers that screwed up the original design...

I'm well aware of who created the cartoon designs for these characters. But my understanding was that they were based off of Takara/Hasbro's toy designs and weren't just made up from scratch. At least that's certainly the case with Ultra Magnus, as he was a Diaclone toy that most definitely preceded TF:TM. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

If we're gonna talk about "happy buttons," what about Megatron?? At least Galvatron didn't have a trigger for a crotch. :wtf

And -- a G1 character is an outdated relic??!? Say it ain't so!!!! Come on -- it's totally unfair to compare *any* G1 toy to something from Energon. My comments about Galvatron were meant as a comparison to other G1 figures, particularly other '86 G1 figures. Which is how it should be. And I have to say, when you've got a room full of bricks that can maybe move their arms straight up and down, a figure like Galvy is gonna look pretty kickass. Of course it's pathetic by today's standards, but it's a friggin' 18-year-old toy, dude! :tfhuh

With megs, you didn't get a reaction from pulling his trigger, provided you could REACH it anywhere NEAR as easily as Galvy's button without pushing Megs' legs out of place. While Galvy emits no less than THREE different audible reactions and his eyes light up. The only reaction from megs came by a small pellet that would fly out, that's assuming it was a modified G1 megs or a Japanese version. Shockwave's trigger was more akin to Galvy's button.

Perhaps "relic" wasn't the best word to use. How is it unfair to compare stuff from G1 with present day tfs? It shows how far we've come in terms of design and concept. It makes a hell of a cursor with which to gauge whether we've regressed or progressed in terms of design and concept. E Megs shows we've come a LONG way and when you've got an heir apparent like E Megs, it's only natural to bring it up.

As for your comments versus my own, I mentioned that Galvy out-posed pretty much everything in his heyday (provided he's leaning against something) and posessed the almighty knee joints. That and he's big. Sure, he's poseable. Especially compared to his G1 ilk, but that doesn't mean I can't point out that he's pretty crappy. I still have the bloody thing staring at me every time I go to sleep as a constant reminder. And I can't honestly say I see it selling well what with E Megs currently out and all, but more than that there's the "gun mode" he could assume... About as absurd as his cannon mode, the gun was a mockery of Decepticon sigil clad plastic. Lord knows where Hasbro might go with that. If it keeps us from getting Sixshot, then anyone wanting galvy is just plain screwed. I don't really care, but I wouldn't spend the money on one should they bother with it.

*steps out to get Galvy some porn and smokes*

Fair enough, then. And you're right, I really can't defend either of Galvatron's alt modes. I'm surprised you didn't mention the giant orange dildo that he carries around on his arm! :wtf

And really, at this point I'd much rather have an E-Megatron than G1 Galvatron. He was a good starting point, but yeah, things have definitely improved since then.

But that's the problem I have with all of the G1 reissues. You hear that they're reissuing old figures that you used to have but gave away when you were in college (hypothetically speaking, of course), and you get all excited and rush down to TRU to pick them up, and get them home, and open them, and...

And then the veil of 20 years' nostalgia is instantly stripped away as you look at the toys that you once thought were so cool. Quite the buzzkill.

Having said that, I *still* would love to see Cyclonus and Scourge re-issued. They made Season 3 worthwhile for me.

Recently, I picked up a G1 Galvatron for $10 on ebay. The only thing he was missing was unfortunately that orange cannon, but other than that a steal for $10. Galvy may not be much of an awesome robot but neither is ol Meg's (my opinion, folks). I think for the most part we want Galvvy and Megs because of their name and who they are. I mean I can't begin to explain my reaction when I opened up reissue of Megs about a month ago. I was like "Did they give me a bootleg or something?" He looks nothing like the cartoon, the same going for Galvy. In defense though, if we were looking for g1's w/ good articulation, how many could we really find. I'd buy Galvvy in a heart beat cuz I like to have 2 of my leaders (one vehicle mode, one robot). Then again, I'm just a 25 yr old K1 Teacher what do I know.

Likewise, I got Rodimus Prime 'cos of who he is and would do the same for Galvy (who is a far superior toy anyways)

yeah -- though as I recall the two looked really strange together. I imagine if they'd kept their relative toy sizes in TF:TM, that last showdown scene in Unicron would have gone something like this:

Optimus Prime ghostie voice: "Arise, Rodimus Prime!"

Hot Rod / Rodimus: "Optimus...!"

Galvatron: "No -- ...er, hang on a minute. Let me get this straight -- you've just inherited the power of the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, and as a result you're now 1/2 my size as opposed to 1/3 my size?"

Rodimus Prime: "Uh... yeah, I guess. So can I, like, defeat you now or something?"

Galvatron: "I think not." [squishes Rodimus Prime under his foot]

Galvatron wins, defeats Unicron with the Matrix, goes on to conquer the universe. The end.

Yeah, all Hotrod did was get Optimus killed. After he does that, he gets a promotion. Man, I need to work for that company. I think I like your ending better dude.
