Peter Cullen Cast as Optimus Prime?

Recommended Posts

keep in mind that what we're talking about is character voices, not the actors' voices themselves. Kaye and Welker played the kind of characters that the roles called for. "Kaye is wrong for G1 Megatron" based on his work in BW is kind of like saying that Frank Welker is wrong for G1 Megatron because he used to voice Freddy in Scooby-Doo.

rewatch A/E/C again, Kaye uses the BW voice for every Megatron he voices.

I think the phrase "phoning it in" is applicable here... I'm sure there would be a bit of a difference if he were being asked to do a main character's voice in a movie and stuff

yeah, like "not expending effort" etc.

Of course who they choose will depend on what type of character they're going for (IMO anyway). If they're making a Megatron that is a maniacal and power-hungry warlord then Welker would be my choice. However, if they're going for a Megatron that is very calculating and prone to Shakespearean monologues then Kaye pretty much has that nailed. Now, that's not to say neither actor is capable of doing a different Megatron, but that's the voice that I feel each actor has mastered.

I agree, good points.

I think that Megs will probably just be plain evil in the movie though, so they would be more likely to go w/ Welker.

well, assuming it's a choice between the two.... though of course an argument could be made that BW/BM Megs was a lot more evil than G1 Megs... or at least more effectively so ;)

but as I said before, Cullen as Prime does place pressure on the filmmakers to also cast Welker... but I get the sense that Welker would have to earn it just like anyone else, since that's pretty clearly what Cullen had to do.

Definitely agree with you there. In reality G1 Megatron was good at barking out orders but horrible at seeing them through. At least Beast Megatron actually accomplished taking over Cybertron, he just wasn't capable of maintaining it. But that's a debate for another time.

well the bad guy has to lose at the end ;)

To be completely honest though.... my issue with Welker is his voice. His voice is more naturally high-pitched than Kaye's (for example). Welker sounds scratchy when he talks in a low register; Kaye sounds... like a guy with a deep voice.

But you know, a lot of this depends on how they characterize Megatron. I don't imagine they would do much with Prime other than make him the "good guy"... but megatron could be evil in all different kinds of ways... thug? mastermind? brute? psychopath? etc.

In terms of voices, just an idea but what about Anthony Hopkins for Megatron's voice?
