Megatron and Prime classics?

I wasn't under the impression that those GI Joe characters existed prior to the 80's toys/cartoon.

Really? I had my doubts about Cobra Commander, but I was pretty sure that Duke has been around for awhile. Either way, those characters have been around for the same 20+ yrs as TFs, so the questions still apply. Anyone know?

I had plenty of the old 12" Joes back in the 70's.  He was just "GI JOE" (like Barbie is just "Barbie"), even though he was available as a blond Germanic, a black dude or a guy with a cheesy 70's beard.  I don't recall any of those different versions having a different name.

I have no specific knowledge of this, but I assume that the 80's-plus GI Joes are sort of a reimagined continuity every couple of years.

So not exactly on the posted topic, but on topic to what people are actually discussing; does GI Joe have this same problem w/ Duke and I guess Cobra Commander, ie their lead characters?

They have been around 40+ yrs and have had many many new characters introduced, but have always (to my knowledge) kept Duke as the leader and basically made him look the same too. Do people think that newer Primes should have no resemblence to G1 Prime or be done away w/ completely?

We had a break when TFs were basically over (G2 barely counts) and then we got BW and BM w/ an entirely different character in the leader role. I just wonder if other long duration lines like GI Joe have had these problems and how they dealt w/ them.

Anyone know? Tman, I know you collect the new GI Joes as well as TFs, any input?

Well, the characters basic selves has stayed the same, CC being introduced in '82 and Duke in '83, but each has gone through numerous changes... outfits excluding, Duke can't seem to decide whether he's going to be a blonde or brunette (toywise), and Cobra Commander had a stint as a full snake and then half-snake/half-man.  Duke's only been the Joe's field-commander, and therefore gets more face time since he's on the battlefield more making the moment-by-moment decisions, whereas Hawk has been the man in charge above him.  Six Sigma I believe is the only line where Duke is the one in complete charge (thus far).

I funny thing is, I've learned more here in a Megs and Prime thread about the Joes than I have here in a Joe thread. Every one's all, "No abla Espan-Joes"

Also, GI-Joe: A Real American Hero has basically followed the same continuity all the way through, with a few minor resets here & there, whereas Transformers, thanks to the primarily Japanese creators, go through the typical japanese mecha yearly complete resets.  Yet each reset is heavily influenced by the original G1, it's the template they seemingly cannot hope to surpass.  Beast Wars worked because it was completely different, and wasn't following any template, but made it up as it went along with continuity focused writers, and after it was successful, retconned themselves into the original G1 universe, making it an extended continuity, which allowed it to achieve an even larger fanbase.

This line, unlike RID, Armada, Energon, Cybertron, Machine Wars, is intended to be G1, redone.  So obviously it's going to be designed around central characters that made G1 so successful, because it's based around G1.  Basically the TF equivalent of Six Sigma.

I'd like to see colored pics please :D

.. I swear they make these things blurry on purpose.

I believe Mitch Hedberg said it best:

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem.  It's not the photographer's fault; Bigfoot is blurry.  And that's extra scary to me, because somewhere there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.  "Run!  He's fuzzy, get outta here!"

That is funny!! :tflaugh I never thought of that. So the new Megs and Prime are blurry too. My eyes hurt already thinking of playing with two out of focus toys.

Infact, I'm surprised these aren't movie merchandise.

My impression of Bay's comments regarding the design of the movie characters is that they're going to be a lot less G1-esque "man-in-a-suit" looking than people are expecting.

The G1 TFs didn't look like men in suits...

I gotta get these, plain and simple. :eek
