I just picked up the Car Robots version recently. Fantastic toys. I don't know why I wrote them off for so long. Probably cause the individual robot modes are lame.

 

I'm not a train fan but bullet \ mag-lev trains are much cooler than steam engines. Rail Racer would have been even better if it was an engine pulling 2 cabs.

 

Capturing 'the spirit' of the original G1 form is good enough for me. I'm hoping there are more alt mode updates than original modes in redux.

yeah me too, i mean as long as i can look at the figure and go  "hey that's so and so" and still be happy with his articulation and colors, then i dont care if they use exactly the same alt modes (which they wont)

the japanese trains had transparent windows to you could see the seats and sruff while hasbro used gray plastic thus hidding the seats (lame but it could be worse)

I can live with the bullet train alt-mode, but I sure hope they use the proper colors.  I don't want them to use white and black.

You misunderstand.  I am speaking from personal experience.  As a kid, I would have thought that a bullet train was pretty cool.  I never said that anyone who likes the bullet train is being childish.  It's just that there's not much to the bullet train's design, outside from causing a, "Wow! That's cool!", reaction.  I think that the bullet train is rather weak as a stand alone alt-mode for Astrotrain.
