Mastering the Universe: The Rise and Fall of a Billion-Dollar Idea

It's a rather provincial view that just because it's a toy property, nobody outside of fandom has heard of it.  If you were talking about something like Sky Commanders, I'd believe you.  But there are a few cartoon properties that are quite well-known outside of "people who watch cartoons all time and still collect the toys."  And TFs is one of them, along with He-Man, GI Joe, Barbie, and TMNT.  It DOES have cultural recognition.

Yes, but what adult is asking to see a live-action version of any of those properties?

Dolph Lundgren just shed a tear.

Why does adulthood matter?  First TF movie targetted at TF fans' age at time of its release.  GI Joe movie targetted at GI Joe fans's ages at time of release.  Same with He-Man.  Same with TMNT.  TF fans happen to be 20s and 30s now.  Avg reader of Spidey was prolly 10 in 1963 when he was coming out.  Was Spider-Man movie only targetted at people who are 10 years old today?  What part of this is so difficult to understand?

Before you get more condenscending, all the people that recognize the franchise don't care if Welker/Cullen do the voices or not. The only people that really care are the ones that were fans in the early 80's. Catering to that small subset of the people that will potentially see the movie makes no sense.

Adults are the ones who buy movie tickets.

And for the last time, this is not TF:TM. That movie was a promotional tool for kids to get them to buy the revamped Transformers toys. This movie is not TF:TM. It's a movie for adults. Which I think is kind of what you implied at the end of your post.... I think.

I don't believe I said it was; I never intended to suggest such or be confused with anyone else in the thread who has.

It's a movie for adults who were kids then and remembered it as such or wouldn't mind doing so.  I doubt it's a movie for adults who didn't care as adults then.

I have only one more thing to say on this subject:

Is the angst overpowering you? :tflaugh

Why is it so hard to accept the idea that this movie isn't being tailored specifically to the G1 fans? As far as I'm concerned, TF:TM was the movie that catered to fans of the show/toyline. Stuff like Spider-Man and X-Men worked because they had a well-balanced mix of plot, action, pretty good acting, and decent scripts. But The Hulk failed because it took itself way too seriously -- it tried to make a comic that's about a guy who goes "HULK SMASH" and tears stuff up when he gets angry into a high art film...which...yeah, doesn't work. When they make a movie into a deep and complicated psychological deal instead of an enjoyably mindless action film, it doesn't work. Of course, there's films that are a bit TOO mindless -- Fantastic Four being an example, although I did enjoy that movie just for how corny it was.

Point is, this movie isn't gonna be aimed at the nerds who spend a half hour rummaging through TFs in TRU or shoot straight over to the toy section at Wal-Mart. It's aimed at the general public, with fans being MARGINALLY figured into the whole equation. So stop whining and acting like Bay has to do what YOU want, because this isn't YOUR movie.
