What is continuity?

Recommended Posts

What of Transformers do you consider canon?

Like, for example, there are some who believe that Japanese continuity is part of American continuity.

Or, some believe The Botcon fanfics are actually canonical.

Or, that Tarantulas is truly the offspring of Unicron.

To name but a few. So, what do YOU think is canon?

Personally, I consider G1 as an amalgamation between for the most part Marvel comics, and a bit Cartoon. But that's mainly because the cartoon is so damn idiotic and non-sensical.

Generation 2 comics are the next step, concluded by Alignment.

After that, Beast Wars and Beast Machines.

That, for me, is canon. Within that region there are many things you can discuss, like whether Tarantulas and the Tripredacus Council are G2, which I believe, or Unicron's Spawn, which I think is rediculous and not very original (Making the big threat related to Unicron is a bit overdone, and very fanfic-ish, IMO).

Dreamwave's own continuity is fascinating to discuss, because it's utulizes as little plotholes as possible, meaning that everything within that particular universe makes sense.

RiD. Armada/Energon and Cybertron are for me each seperate continuities.

Japanese continuity: half the time they contradict themselves even more than they contradict US-stories, so I won't bother with that.

G1, BT, RM, Scramble City, TFTM, 2010, Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory, Zone, Battlestars, Operation Combination, G2 Manga, BW, BWII, BWNeo, BM, Primeval Dawn, Wreckers, and Universe

A "version" of Machine Wars, US G2, and Alignment may take place in the 300 year gap between the Great wars and BW.

If I haven't seen it, I don't think it's cannon.  and I think trying to mix parts from different series is silly.  I don't see what the problem is with having multiple continuities.

That's pretty much how I see it too, the comic made more sense and always took the best bits from the 'toon anyways.

Although I see Japanese G1 in the same way as the movie was in the comics, potential futures from the 'main' continuity that were avoided.

But I don't think Dreamwave makes sense in the slightest.

Grimlock's handling in particular was poorly thought through, childishly handled and reflections of that can be found throughout the series.

I mostly agree with you.

For me TEH continuity is:

- G1 Marvel US comics (with a little bit of the UK comics); although I do recognize the way some TF's were portrayed on the cartoon: Ironhide, Shrapnell, Jazz, etc...

- G2 comics.

- End of the great war; undocumented since I don't acknowledge the alignment story.

- BW

- BM

I'm in doubt about the Wrecker/universe comics. Although I do like many things about them, they include the Quints for which I care very little.

As for the Tarantulas/tripredacus council. I see the comments about Unicron's spawn as a reference to a Marvel comic (# 74 I think) in which Primus revealed that just before he had gone dorment Unicron had slightly reprogrammed a few of the TF to make them his followers and to strike at the leader of the TF's when Unicron was coming. That, to me, is the origin of Tarantulas and his ilk.

RiD/Armada/Energon/Cybertron...there jus toys to me. I like neither the cartoons, nor the comics nor even the given techspec. There just toys.

Dreamwave...came close to being the new continuity for me. If they had gone bankrupt and were still publishing stories (with Brad Mick as writer) then the chances are very good I would've come to see that as the continuity.

At one point in time, I liked the idea of combining everything.  But now, I see it just doesn't work to connect everything.

So I see it as such:

G1 Cartoon, Marvel G1, Marvel G2, BW, BM = Generation 1 continuity, the TRUE continuity IMO.  There may be contradictions, but in the end, they work together in some fashion.

BotCon/Universe comics = I'm undecided on these, they're nice stories, but I don't know if they should be their own continuity or part of G1.

RID = RID continuity

Armada/Energon/Cybertron = AEC continuity

And then there is everything in Japan prior to the year 2000, which I will label as Japanese G1 continuity.  The series after 2000 are their own continuities according to my breakdown of the US versions.

Dreamwave is its own continuity.

IDW is its own continuity.

BTW, all of these exist because of BW Megatron and his tampering with the G1 continuity when he tried to kill Optimus Prime. :P

There is no true continuity or canon. It's just a mess of different continuities, G1 is atleast 5.

Marvel G1 US, G2, BW, BM continuity

Marvel G1 UK, G2, BW, BM continuity

G1 Cartoon, BW, BM continuity

G1 Cartoon, Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory, Zone.... BW, BW Neo, BW II...BM continuity

War Within, Dreamwave G1 continuity

RiD continuity

Armada, Energon, Cybertron continuity

Micron Legend, Superlink continuity

Galaxy Force continuity

Dreamwave Armada, Energon continuity

IDW continuity

Universe continuity

Maybe it would help if we made a list of all the inconisitencies. Whatever is left over is canon, and the rest can be sorted out.

Nothing would be left except Prime died at some point and Unicron attacked. :tflaugh

I usually make up my own continuity.
