Question about Repainting

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! I'm about to repaint a Cyb. Armorhide into a G1 Ironhide, and a Cyb. Hardtop into G2 Beachcomber. I've already washed the armorhide's parts in hot soapy water, but I neglected to buff the parts with 00000 grade steel wool, which I have on hand. Do I need to buff the parts and rewash them, or will the paint adhere to the plastic without it?

I'm using Testors gray acrylic primer, acrylic Guard Red, acrylic Steel Green, enamel chrome silver, acrylic clear blue, enamel yellow, and a Tamiya gun metal gray.

Unfortunately, I haven't standardized my paints yet, thus the random selection of enamels and acrylics, though my favorites right now are acrylics for easy brush cean up.

Thanks for the help ahead of time!

I think the wash is all that is really needed...  the paints/primer should adhere to the plastic once any mold release oil is taken off.  I've never buffed, but I do wash the pieces.

i don't buff.

Roughing the plastic with sandpaper or steel wool enables the primer/paint to better adhere to the plastic. It works without, but it just works better with. Since it is already hard enough to make the paint/primer really stick (I got a big laugh in a paintstore when I said I needed a primer or paint that stuck to ABS), I'd rough it up. Can only help.

As for the paint...I've always been told that you should never ever use acryllics on enamel or the other way around. Since I only use enamel I've complete forgotten why you should never do this, but it wasn't good.
