Don Murphy's Sunday Update

You know what I like about giant fighter action flicks? Building are leveled cars smashed and homes destroyed but you never hear about casualties. Power Rangers have destroy so many buildings themselves.

If Megs destroys a building and nothing is mentioned about the casualties, just pretend it was a mass homoside.

how about a mass gheyicide? You can get away with that in a kids' show (correction -- you can get away with that in an ASIAN kids' show) because the kids never think about the people in buildings, etc.

As a matter of fact, I can't think of any times that they destroyed a populated building in G1...

LM:

Had to chime in after reading your post.

What a biggoted comment!  Like asian kids are less likely to think about mass casualties?  How so?  I don't think ANY kids really think about mass casualties--at least to the effect that you imply by your statement.  When I watched those old Godzilla flicks as a kid, I never really thought of the casualties, just the awesome rubber suits dukin it out and destroying things--"that was cool-did you see that!"

It's true that asian anime tends to portray more scale of violence--look at a lot of Gundam stories and there's boundless casualties portrayed, but I wouldn't think that lends itself to kids not realizing the scale of war; the opposite--I think it sends a message that war is terrible.

Not showing that to kids in the US (black, white, ASIAN, ...) only allows generations to grow up and not really see the reality of loss.  We tend to shield our kids, for better and for worse, from such horrors in cartoons.

Japan is a country where anime (or drawn art-comics, movies, whathave you) is just as genuine a medium as live stories.  It's considered a form of art.

Go rent "Graveyard of the Fireflies" by Miyazaki; he's a true master in his story telling.

I just think your statement about Asian (?) kids "never think about the people in buildings, etc." totally baseless and incorrect.

Look at OUR movies and video games!!!!  Hey, they censored GTA III; I loved that game at the time and all it's tastelessness.  But every little kid I've seen play it never thinks of the scale of carnage like us adults do.  It's just "that was cool--did you see that!"

KT out.

To explain that a bit: I was referring to the fact that I only ever see rampant acts of civic destruction in imported TV shows (including, and especially, Power Rangers). (I'm not counting US cartoons such as the Powerpuff Girls that do stuff like that for ironic effect.) My comment about kids was meant to apply to all kids. I just think the difference between what is okay in the US versus what is okay in Japan is notable.

So don't worry, I'm not looking to start up any internment camps or anything.

I think Madhammer's comment was in reference to Children's shows.

I think that its clear that TELEVISION in Japan doesnt have the Pansy/PC factor tha most of our TV shows have here in America.

Meaning:

Violence/Cursing is more accepted.

If there is a statement to be made for desensitization - i am not qualified to judege one country over another.  But i do agree that American Media (TV specifically) has totally stripped the Cause/Effect

out of drama... and thats unfortunate...

Hunter

Oh, I got ya now.  Good points LM and HunterRose.  That's -kinda- what I was eluding to also.  There's many ironies in our messages to children in their media in this country.  It's one thing to allow kids to watch violence and let it stay at that.  It's another to explain the violence and why it's bad-if violence is part of a story.  In a way, it depends on how much we're involved with our kids and what they see, hear, and act out.  But I guess we're getting off topic of this thread!

AND... It's Christmas time!  Keep those less fortunate in our hearts and prayers!

Happy TForming!

Uh oh...

No Arcee.

Happy Holidays

And the sound of a million femmebot fanboys crying out in anger.

Accompanied by the sound of the %#$& hitting the fan.

Considering that Arcee was supposed to be in it per Hasbro's request:  too bad they'll replace her with Hot Shot. :tflaugh

Admittedly that was my reaction, but Roberto asked people restrain their celebrations in honor of the Arcee fans and mentioned that she had been removed for story reasons, not for any other.

But nonetheless, party at mine. ;)

I'm sorry, but I've been nursing an Arcee hatred ever since 1986. So SCREW EVERYONE ELSE, IT'S DANCING TIME! :P
