I miss old school box art

Recommended Posts

Anyone else remeber back in the good old days when toys were shown not with some dumb simple picture, but amazing artwork on the back of the boxes? There was the whole string of G1 toys:

I think they phased out when CG art became big. Around the time Beast Wars came in the old school went out and we saw CG artwork and a mix of normal Photos of the toys on the boxes and cards. Sure there are a few toys here and there but it's not the same. Whatever happened to the days of overhyping a toy with great artwork and then dashing the childs dream with a simple toy?!

I think the fact that packaging is getting smaller and that presentation has become the main focus of the toy, the G1 poster style on the back of the package was replaced in lieu of a more detail picture of the toy itself to highlight its strengths. In a way, I think this is a good thing because I remember looking at the packaging of a G1 toy and didn't get too much information from it, unlike the packaging now where you see a larger picture of the toy's alt mode and robot mode - this gives me a good idea of what the toy is like and what to expect from it.

I actually never much cared for the back art, but I always liked the front art. I hate when they photoshop a phot to make it look like art. What the hells the point.

You mean like the back of Alternator boxes?

Yeah, I like the box front art/card front art more than that of the back. The back art is pretty much a standard piece for a run/series of the time (refer to G1 packaging and you'll know what I am talking about) while the front art is what defines the toy.

ive got a poster with the G1 box art its pritty cool

the only thing i miss is the red and purple squares like the hasbro reissues and the RM skywarp and Thunder cracker sets have

I didn't really like the back art of the old toys, not even the front art as they didn't even look like their cartoon counterparts.

Me too.  Somehow that adds to the appeal of reissues and e-Hobby exclusive sets.  It's funny how we didn't pay attention to these details back in the day (i.e., the box art, the catalog pamphlets, STARS brochures, etc.) but in hindsight, they were sort of an integral part of buying a TF.

I liked those pamphlets- the only way to see the rest of the line before the Intarweb came along.
