End of Crappy Optimus Primes?

Recommended Posts

I think most people on TFans know me as the guy with the cat avatar wearing a duck hat. More importantly, I think a lot of you know me as the #1 Optimus Prime "hater." But bashing Optimus Prime is not the purpose of this thread.

With "Pepsi Convoy" released, I honestly think Optimus Prime has reached a new low. Say what you will about him being a corporate whore, or people buying this toy being tasteless and lame, but the fact remains that it seems like Takara has made its intention known that anything you slap the name "Optimus Prime" onto, its legion of drooling worshippers/fans will buy it without thinking twice - these people are eager to add this toy to their 58 Optimus Primes they've already got in their collection. However, IMHO, I think Pepsi Convoy is the straw that broke the camel's back.

After RID Optimus Prime, Armada Optimus Prime and Energon Optimus Prime, we were treated to the amazing pieces such as MPOP and GF/Cybertron Optimus Prime. Not coincidently, I've noticed the TRUs, Wal-Marts, Zellers, and other retail stores are/were swamped with RID/Armada/Energon Optimus Prime while MPOP and GF/Cybertron Optimus Prime had people going crazy for them like Oprah at an open buffet. Perhaps Hasbro/Takara noticed that crap don't sell, and they shouldn't. I know a lot of you will disagree with my assessment on RID/Armada/Energon Optimus Prime, but what I've said is my humble opinion on those toys.

If we buy Pepsi Convoy, are we only reinforcing the fact that we are going to buy anything with the name "Optimus Prime" slap on it, or do we, as consumers, are going to exercise our power to not buy crap? My fear is that if people are going to shell a lot of money for Pepsi Convoy, whatever incarnation of Optimus Primes we are going to get in the future would be crappy because of the fact that despite what happens, Optimus Prime makes money no matter how poorly designed the toy is going to be.

Personally, I am hoping the high quality Optimus Primes we've been getting continues. I hope that fans are willing to be more discriminate about their purchases before they lay down their hard earned dollars to buy whatever is presented to them.

I'm going to buy 6 Pepsi Optimus Primes, just to make you mad.  The real question is when will they sell an Ultra Magnus that carries Rum? Everyone knows the 2 go hand in hand.

PRIME RULES ALL............................................ALL

Prime......and sometimes Captain Morgan.  Everytime he sails in I go 26 rounds with him, and he always wins :)

I want Pepsi Optimus Prime because my very first Transformer was the Original Pepsi Optimus Prime. So there is a nostalgia thing there for me.

Nah, they'll make a Megatron tank that hauls around coke, just to make the war go one step lower.

I do have to agree with Satanstorm, though. RiD and Armada were both crap, and Energon could have been executed a lot better than he was. I still like him, but as a Prime, he's a disappointment.

I'll say it, I've disagreed with Satanstorm in the past because I actually bought those toys, simply because they carried the name "Prime." So of course, having the truth pointed out to me was going to make me a little mad. But we have to realize here, that companies will only do as good a job as they have to. That's nothing to do with performance, it all has to do with profit. Why put more effort into a toy if it's not going to increase profit? So we, as consumers, have to tell Hasbro we won't buy any of their crap figures anymore, Override included!

We need to be more discerning, if for no other reason than that Mattel doesn't have a huge line of transforming toys. There's no real competition out there for Hasbro, so there's no outside quality control for the consumer.

*gets off soapbox, dusts self off*

Are people really going to spend 60 bucks to pick up a Prime with Pepsi stuck all over it? That's just silly. I saw that thing and wondered who pocketed how much.

wtf RiD prime ruled and bendy armada prime was cool as hell

i agree that capitalist convoy is a low but ive only ever had 1 G1 prime and it was a banged up POS i got for free so hes another chance to get him with out going to ebay

I agree, I think RiD Prime and the bendy armada Prime were good.  Fattimus Prime from the Energon line was one of the biggest of sh*t I've ever bought. but I ha to buy him, because I had all of the other bots, and the autobots need their leader.

I wish they weren't making the Dodge Ram Optimus Prime, I think that they are using his name to breath new life into the alternators line, but I always felt that masterpice prime did just fine.

Also, A Coke toting megatron LOL!!!!

I'm so with you on this one Satanstorm. Pepsi Convoy may be a die hard collectable and worth the expense but that still doesn't change the fact this is nothing more than Coporate exploitation at it's lowest peak. I can't really recall many die hard fans asking for or so much as suggesting it. I already havea hasbro reissue so I have little need for another.

So you don't gey the wrong idea I'm not really an optimus hater, I just don't think of him as highly as most others. As for the need to own anything with Optimus Prime's name stamped on it, sadly I don't have a leg to stand on in that argument. I own ten altogether different Primes right now including Armada/Energon, and the much hated Machine Wars one. Not the greatest representations of Optimus but if I find a toy is both unique, and different enough without  being utter crap despite it being Optimus or any other character chance are I'll grab it. I even see some merit in getting a Starsaber, though that won't happen anytime soon unless distributors drop the price by at least 50%.

My final thoughts on PepsiPrime is if you can afford him with ease and want every single Prime in your collection go for it. I however am going to patiently wait for the rerelease of G2 Laser Prime. Now that is a mold actually worth shelling out for. :thumb
