Rubber lovin it ? or not

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone.

I have a small question which has probably been asked before, but I could not find it. Therefor this small question.

I just picked up cybertron Thundercracker and Vector Prime. Nice molds but I can not get used to the rubber. From my old collection I have the G2 laserrods, ( i believe) which had rubber for the waist. When you turned the upper half it could make a strike motion, really nice. But as time went on, the rubber decayed. and now I fear to transform them as this could break the toys.

I also have some KO animal transformers from 10 years ago, bugs with rubber wings, the rubber dried out, and some are cracked and broken.

Does the galaxy force Vector Prime and Thundercracker also contain the rubber, as I am starting with collecting cybertron.?? Please reply as I really need to know.

I am not concerned with the money involved to get galaxy force instead of cybertron. As I rather spend US$ 20 on a toy I have for display 20 years than US$ 15 which breaks after 4 years.

Therefore should I switch to galaxy force for the lack of rubber,  or does galaxy force also contains rubber.

GF Thundercracker has rubber, Vector Prime does not.

Both Cybertron Megatron and GF Master Megatron/Galvatron have rubber.

Mudflap has a rubber saw and Demolisher has a plastic saw.

Those are the ones I know about.

Thanks!

how do you think the rubber will be in about 10 years, still nice or .....

thats the first thing i noticed on cyb megs. lotsa rubber. i was thinking "is this he way itll be from now on?". i cant say its a bad idea really. but im just not used to it. mostly for parts where it doesnt seem nessesary. so they say diecast is expensive. what next? solid plastic isnt cost effective?

Cybertron Vector Prime uses a ruberized plastic for the wings and sword. The Galaxy Force version is made of a harder compound. Galaxy Force Demolishor (Mudflap) also has a harder saw blade.

In my experience, toys with rubber parts will decay if you put unnecessary (or unintentional) wear to them.  I've also had toys with rubber parts that have been fine over the years (the rubber becomes a bit brittle but holds it's own).  Maybe twisting parts that were not intended to be twisted will shorten the life of said parts.

Best example I can think of now are GI Joes.  They have that rubber band that holds the torso to the leg/pelvis.  If you twist them and make them into mini helicopters (come on and admit it!  You've done it before!), the rubber wears and tends to break.  I also have had Joes that I did not twist and they are still fine after all them years.

AFAIK, the soft plastic used on many TFs is not rubber, so shouldn't degrade like rubber eventually does.

G1 rubber lasts for a long time (my now sold G1 prime from end 80ties never had any problems with his rubber tires)

but the RiD rubber tires can wear out even when you're not using it, so Hasbro got cheaper during time

Takara is just as at fault, as the same degradation has occurred in Car Robots tires, as well.

Additionally, I don't think it has anything to do with the quality of rubber, or else they'd all just randomly crumble into powdery messes.  There's probably a difference in the way the tires are made that causes a structural weakness, since every single last one of them has been observed to split in exactly the same place.
