Is Hot Shot suposed to be Hot Rod?

Recommended Posts

I tried to deny it forever because the original Hot Shot on Armada was worthless, but when I was searching for Scourge to buy I came across a bunch of Robot in disguise figures and there was one with flames on it called Hot Shot.  I assume this was the first ever Hot Shot figure.  The fact that it had flames, which is so synonomous with Hot Rod, makes me assume they meant for Hot Shot to be the next Hot Rod.

And Hot Rod isn't Hot Rod without his great one liners and attitude, which I never saw on Hot Shot. :tfgrin

The Hot Shot from RiD wasn't the same type of Hot Shot that was in A/E/C.  He was only in one or two episodes as a pretty minor character.

Hot Rod as the name is, is no longer usable for any character (due to it being the name of Hot Rods), hence the change to Hot Shot, used in the last few TF incarnations.

hot shot looks like a cross between hot rod and bumblebee

I would say probably.  My general observation is that roles in the stories tend to be held as more important than the actual development of the character, and thus the role is what is more consistently preserved in every incarnation.  Optimus is always the wise, heroic, time-tested leader.  Megatron is always the competent villainous leader.  Starscream is always the opportunist coward waiting for his chance to usurp control.  I would even go so far's to say, the characters tend to be imprisoned by their roles.  For instance, G1 Starscream was often a schizophrenic mix of different characters: one who was an incompetent boob (a la Cobra Commander), one who was comic relief, and one who was a rather competent and brilliant strategist at times.  Starscream generally took on whatever characteristics the writers needed his role for and those characteristics weren't always reconcileable.  I think it's been a reflection that Hasbro has been too focused on trying to recreate the same story formulas rather than taking the risk of branching out to more potentially inneresting stuff.  This is possibly a "lesson" they learned when the fans demanded the resurrection of Optimus Prime so long ago..

it's loosely believed that hot rod is now hot shot, then the went and brought in rodimus  :tfhuh  so now it's back to being up in the air, but hot shots bio says destined to lead or born to lead or something like that, so who knows anymore :redface

just because Rodimus is a seperate character - doesnt mean that Hotrod/Shot cant still be the current incarnation of HotRod.

But i agree with grimlock - he seems to be cross between "Hot Rod" and "Bumblebee"

The more complicated answer?

Hot Rod is too generic a term to copyright for a toy, same with Jazz, Hound, Tracks, Skids and the GI Joe characters Ripper Torch and Burnout.
