Using this weekend’s BotCon held in Fort Worth, Texas as a platform, IDW officially announced its Beast Wars plans, which will join the publisher’s Transformers line in early 2006.

As IDW Editor in Chief Chris Ryall explained to Newsarama, the four issue Beast Wars: The Gathering miniseries will debut in February, written by Simeon Furman, with art by Don Figueroa and Josh Burcham. The miniseries will carry a $2.99 cover price.

Putting on his pitchman hat, Ryall described the miniseries as:

“The Beast Wars: a timelost conflict between renegade Predacon commander Megatron and his Maximal counterpart Optimus Primal (and their respective troopers) on prehistoric Earth. Meanwhile, on Cybertron, the increasingly reckless and chaotic actions of Megatron causes grave concern for the Predacon Tri-Predacus Council, who — in an era of Maximal rule — wish to keep a low profile, rebuild their power base in secret and strike only when the time is right. Clearly…

… action must be taken!

According to Furman, the storyline will reflect the status quo of the earthbound Beast Wars, and “make clear the connection/evolution from the [cartoon series] G1 era – i.e. the end of the ‘Great War,’ the downsizing due to Energon shortages and so on) The distinction between G1 Megatron and BW Megatron will be clearly made.

IDW’s regular Transformers series begins in January, with plans still rolling for a “best of series, which will reprint classic Transformers stories from the Marvel era as a series of $1.99 issues. Also, Ryall added that plans for an “Elseworlds-esque Transformers miniseries by established pros are moving forward, with Ted McKeever signed on to produce the first. While neither confirming nor denying, Ryall said that IDW hopes that The Gathering is the first in a line of Beast Wars miniseries, and he, personally, would like to see Figueroa working on more Transformers projects as soon as possible.

In one final tease, Ryall hinted that a weekly Transformers event will most likely be coming by mid-2006.

Elseworlds-type stories!! Excellent! That means stories focused on characters with no continuity hinderances. And Ted McKeever!! Woot!

I like the Idea of leaving the Main continuity alone but I Kinda wanna see the main cast. But I do wanna see nonshow characters in action. but I dont wanna see the main story altered. but.....*headache*

Magmatron. I'm kind of surprised. Wasn't this the artwork for the cancelled DW Beast Wars comic done by Don, that Transtopia/TFMaster.com showcased a while back?

Aoi
