Diaclone vs Trasformer

Recommended Posts

OK you guys seemed to be able to tell the difference between a Diakron and Diaclone toy... however... What is the difference between a Diaclone and the GiG licensed "Trasformer" line? And don't say the box.

I would think quality, possibly some missles being dropped since these were sold outside of japan (these were the later ones right?). I've never seen a GiGi one so i'm not sure

If by GiG you mean Diaclone toys in Italian packaging, then apart from the box, the missiles were the only real difference. GiG toys had oversized rubber 'bopper' missiles rather than the typical Takara Diaclone/G1 missiles.

So my Diaclone New Countach LP500S Police Type aka "Clamp Down" without the missiles I have no way of determining if it is the Japanese or Italian version. There were no sticker differences either?

You could check the copyright stamp, though the one on my GiG Diaclone Slag just says Takara Japan, so I'm guessing the same applies to other European Diaclones. In which case, I'd say there's no way to tell European or Japanese Diaclones apart solely from the toy.

Well, because TraSformers are kinda a obscure hodge podge of Diaclone left overs and or Transformer toys, it kinda blurrs the lines.

Take Hoist for example.  From the 3 or 4 I have had, pretty much its the same as the diaclone version, cept its the wrong color (green, damn the luck).  Springs in the hands are diaclone strong, stickers say WRECKER.  And hoist was not released in green, just red and blue.

I forget, might there be any GIG markings on the toys them selves?  Or just the boxes...probably just the boxes and the Takara bits.

Its rather annoying actually.  It would seem they launched TraSformers because it was the cheapest way to move more left over product.  Marked the Diaclone boxes, re done in Italian TraSformers probably because they were holding off on the licenses and what not with Transformers boxes, and ran with the toys till they ran out, made more in the correct colors and then eventually converted to TF.

I would give it a guess that they simply did not want to waste the money with the drivers, and rather than the safety of keeping them out of the reach of children just did not make more.

Even "Bopper" missiles (so glad I was one of the first to call them that, after Star Blazers space marines Bopper missiles they reminded me of) are left overs from Micronauts (not of course micro man.)  Wonder what if any of the GIG Microman/Naut toys were like.

Just thinking about Powered Convoy aka Magnus.  From what is known, it would seem that it came with both the blue cab and the red (optimus prime) versions.  However I do not recall anyone ever coming up with the red white and blue version of the trailer or the cab in the diaclone like box.  You would think that just filling boxes with left over toys they might have released a horrible mix.

I wrote a long article on the Diaclone Police Countach that will help you tell whether it is Italian or Japanese:
