This relates to the fight abord Astro Train.  Why did Starscream nominate himself

leader instead of just declaring himself leader?  He usually says things like this when he thinks Megatron is destroyed:

I wonder why he didn't use one of these lines.

because the G1 writers never kept track of continuity.

 

for the most part, the cartoon episodes and the movie were meant to be self-contained toy commercials. the writers didn't care about stuff like continuity, they were concerned about getting paid for doing a good job of promoting Hasbro's new toyline.

I guess I should have said "aside from the writing."  Lets just stick to the characters.  I want to know what theories people have.

maybe he never expected to be leader for long in the earlier episodes because he knew megs wasn't really dead.

 

In the movie, he was, so Starscream thought being voted leader would help him keep the position.  Plus, there's a lot of time between S2 and TFTM.  He could've changed.

you know, i never understood the need to explain away what is simply bad writing with grandois theories based on a twenty year old cartoon who's writers never thought would last more than 2 years tops.

 

if you want to write your own fan-fiction over the whole thing then go right ahead but that doesn't change the fact that you are making a mountain out of a molehill.

I think he just wanted to say something different for a change.

It was probably a scene they had wanted to do for a long time, but never had the time to do in a 22 min show.

I agree with Don. There's not a lot of time for extraneous dialogue in a half-hour show. If the writer's intent is for Starscream to end up as the leader, the most efficient way to get there is just for him to say "okay I'm the leader now." Done.

 

But if you're asking for retcon... I got nothing.
