G1 Prime

Yes, but in War Dawn, Megatron was one of the first few Decepticons and he starts the war, but in S3, the war had been going on for millions of years. Explain that one. ;)

there was alot of fighting on cybertron before the autobots left. and the ark and it's inhabbitants were stranded dormant on earth for millions for years

This is why I don't like the G1 story arcs.. too many conflicting accounts. I just say, the writers had no f**kin clue what they were doing, and were just trying to make a somewhat decent 30 minute commercial. :roll

In "the core," he uses mind control devices to force Devestator to be good.

Devestator is a combination of each of the Constructicons personalities. As you recall, the mind control didn't work when they were individual bots with their own thoughts. What Prime did essentially was take control of a mob.

That didn't answer the question. In S2 Megatron started the war, in S3 the war predated Megatron. Which is it?

That doesn't work because he had individual control of Hook when they went back to the ark.

No...the rest of the robots were still combined into Devastator. Though Hook was loose as a seperate robot, his mind was still part of Devastator. Something as how the Energon combiner-limbs. This is different from when First Aid decided to step out of the Protectobot-team. When he didn't combine with them, his personality was kept his own. Only when he willingly became part of the gestalt, did his personality submerge into the gestalt's mind.

Hook was still mentally mubmerged into Devastator, and Prime never had control over the Hook-personality.

Optimus is definitely a fraud.  What about isolating the dinobots on an island, just because he didn't like their personalities?

Watch Dinobot Island again. It was a safety measure, the Dinobots were put there to learn to be less stupidly destructive to everything and everyone around them. On the island, they were free to roam around and be as brash and violent as they pleased. It was kind of like a major time out for Grim and crew.

More often than not, the Dinobot's proved to be frightening liabilities to the health and welfare of the sentient beings Optimus sought to protect and the soldiers working under him. Seeing them go berserk once was bad enough because they couldn't take them down without additional Dino power. They were also manipulated into almost destroying Optimus Prime by Soundwave.

Were he a fraud, he would have scrapped those Dino-bastards as a kneejerk response to their multiple attempts on his life and those around him. Instead, while he had to consider the rights of many over the rights of the few, he instead had them put under what was essentially a forced stasis lock in order to keep them handy as a last minute trump card and saving those that they might harm.

Mostly, the writing was far from stellar. But Optimus, all the same, went out of his way to selflessly protect everyone without hesitation. He gave Megatron mercy when everyone knows he's the last 'bot to deserve it and if there was somone in peril... he had this habit of taking the bullet for a friend (even *spits* Hot Rod) as eagerly as he would for a stranger. His stalwart compassion is what makes him the defining goodguy badass.

I just got the complete series of G1 off ebay, and am about halfway through S2.  I've noticed that Prime isn't the hero I remember.  I thought his motto was "freedom is the right of all sentient beings," but he doesn't live that.

In the episode "changing gears," He considers leaving Gears' personallity corrupted just becuase the other autobots like him better that way.

In "the core," he uses mind control devices to force Devestator to be good.

Those are the only two instances I've found so far.  What does anyone else think of this?  Are transformers not sentient, or is Optimus a fraud?

The gears thing was a joke. :redface I'm almost positive they even covered that it was a joke. Y'know, a quip about leaving him in "nice-mode," followed by chipper Starscreaming by gears; which prompts everyone to laugh at the thought. Everyone, save Gears.

The Core? Well, considering the botched continuity with regards to the constructicons he could have been giving them the rehabilitation they've longed for. Possibly freed them from the bondage that is servitude to Megatron.

But let's say it's against their will. The constructicons, aside from being the only Decepticon minds to rival those of the Autobot gadgeteers, combined into the one deciding factor which could actually combat, if not neutralize the Dinobots. Devastator, the single most dangerous entity next to Megatron at the time within the Decepticon forces... had been pacified. Made docile. Made from a mortal enemy, to what appeared to be six loyal new friends that could work in tandem to end the war.

He wasn't hurting the Constructicons by doing this even if we didn't assume the OS origin. We don't know which origin was being brought into play for this context, if any. However, if they had been allowed to keep Devastator as the first Autobot gestalt then the simple deterrent might have brought this vicious war to a quick close and taken the whole of the Transformer race from Earth before they had time to establish cities. In theory, having a small crew of brainy engineers be bumped up to a giant TEAM of engineers could have led to some fascinating developments, like the above " potentially ending of the war on earth."

We don't know what they had planned for the Constructicons. Autobots aren't the ones who feed their prisoners to smelting pits so I imagine it wasn't anything too terrifying. :) Along the line, even if they were a hair's breadth from finishing things up I imagine Prime would want to give the Constructicons the ultimate decision to decide their fate. He'd be an idiot not to capitalize on the peace of mind given by the Constructicons joining their ranks would bring, initially anyone would do this. But Prime had this annoying habit of leading from his heart so I am confident that even if the idea had not been foiled, Prime would have cut them loose and ultimately given them the choice to stay or rejoin the 'Cons.

What about Nightbird, Prime seemed comtept with letting her Rot in jail.

I don't recall that incident. Could ya shed some more light on it?
