My first try at painting a Transformer

Recommended Posts

Okay, I loved the Transformers RID Optimus Prime. However, I had the Sam's Club exclusive - in otherwords, TOO DAMN YELLOW! UGLY!

So......after spending some dough at a hobby shop on some spraypaints, acrylics and a paintbrush, I have painted it to a much cooler looking theme, at least in my opinion. I've always loved black and gold, and I added some red as an homage to what has traditionally been an Optimus color.

It's not 100% finished, but by and large all I have to do now is paint some smaller areas/retouch some larger ones. (And find a smaller screwdriver, so that I might totally dissasemble his torso - the lower half of it it still yellow, but hidden in this picture.)

Total time spent? Probably about 4 hours overall - amazing what a hairdryer can do for waitimes on paint drying.

Lessons learned? Dammit I hate painting small stuff - his head took me 30 minutes in and of itself. Spraying a blob of black paint on a sheet and then mopping it up with a brush is a great way of doing detail painting.

Paints used? Tamiya spraypaints and acrylics. Haze Gray spraypaint for the base coat, Metallic Black for the main, and Metallic Red for highlights/wrist guns. The gold is Gold Leaf Acrylic, from Tamiya. Still gotta figure out where to put the chrome silver I bought and didn't use.....:)

I really am surprised as to how my first attempt at "modding" a transformer went.

I'd appreciate some comments on it, etc.....now I'm looking for a new target. (I plan on combining him with my Ultra Magnus to see what they look like together with this paint scheme.....I'll post a pic later.)

That looks alot like the black exclusive that is very rare.

Really? I had no idea that there was a rare black version of this figure.

The more I look at it, the more I notice little imperfections that I need to retouch tomorrow........the curse of being a perfectionist.

Yeah UnicronimusPrime is right it really does....nice job. :thumb

way nice

here's to hopin it doesnt get chipped to hell when you transform/combine him

oh, you put his shoulder pads on the wrong shoulders too :P

Whoops on the shoulders......:)

As far as chipping, I haven't noticed too much yet when I manipulate him. I think what I have to worry about there would be the knobs that are used in holding him together - I have to apply more force on them than I used to, probably because of the extra paint. But the good news is that he didn't chip at all when I combined him with Ultra Magnus last night, nor does he chip when I take parts off for detailing.

I probably won't end up transforming him much outside of getting one picture of him as the firetruck when I finish detailing him - I plan on picking up two red OP RIDs because I want one to combine with my Ultra, and one to stand as a normal red Prime. That, and it's one of the best transformers I've ever run across.

The more I look at my Wal Mart exclusive Landfill, the more I wonder what HE would look like as a black and gold warrior - Perhaps I'll end up doing an entire corps of them. :)
