How exactly did Bob Skir almost RUIN Transformers?

Recommended Posts

People hated Bob Skir, but I must confess, I know almost nothing about the situation. I have yet to see Beast Machines, but I hear the ending is something debated a lot.

Why do people have a strong distaste for this time in the series?

Is it a good show? Was he a good writer?

Im also looking to possibly collect the Beast Machines toys after I get into Beast Wars, if the show is good. Are they any good? I hear some fans ragging on them on some sites.

Anybody care to explain?

I mainly collect Alts, but im looking to see what else is good out there.

I think the main reason Skir got so many attacks was the simple fact that he shocked many fans because he took Transformers in a radically different direction. The ending to BM is odd, but its not that bad. The only problem I had with Skir is that he could have done a better job researching G1 since he does reference it like that seen in BW.

The toys are hit or miss.

Jetstorm and Tankor are great, but some like the original Cheetor and Buzzsaw are a bit of a disappointment. Many people hate the line simply due to the fact that it is not show accurate, but don't let that stop you.

I know that you intented flame bait.

I think he did just fine with his G1 research. The "weapons" that Megatron and Primal use at the end of Season 1... I just thought that was a brilliant way to bring in some G1 continuity and tie it to the themes that were brought out in BM. I think most people just got their panties in a bunch about the techno-organic thing.

Personally, I don't give a crap. They did something different with Transformers. Waah. Hopefully now that we've had four years of G1 retreads, people might start to revisit their initial judgments about the show.

BM is highly underrated. Most of the G1 errors that bothered me were actually the minor things that could have been left out, like the misspelling of Iacon.

I loved the "weapons" that came back from G1, that was great.

I wish I had been old enough to enjoy Beast Wars or Beast Machines. Anything with the name Transformers on it [except knockoffs and Gobots].

I primarly only collect alts. They are very realistic and takes me back to when G1 was the most awesome cartoon.

Would you recomend this series (Beast Machines) to someone like me?

Also I dont understand why people seem to hate this show. Come on, robots that turned into cars and guns and trucks rocks. I hear this is a G1 continuation, so im excited to get into it, if its any good.

Prime is still a truck, right? A big old semi like the MP prime? God I hope so. They cant mess that up at least.

Thanks guys.

What series are you talking about? Alts? Beast Machines? Also Alts didn't have a TV show.

Bob Skir was a good writer.  The BM episodes he actually scripted himself tend to be pretty great.

He and Marty Isenberg were arguably not good story editors.  A lot of scripts made it to the screen that the editors should have thrown out, particularly "Forbidden Fruit".  Now, allegedly Isenberg was editor for all of season 1, while Skir edited all of season 2, so that might get Skir off the hook; I enjoyed the hell out of season 2.  But season 1 blew.

Of course, Skir kinda suffers for the same reasons as Aaron Archer; people know his name, and therefore he's a magnet for all criticism.  Before the show even aired, people were screaming for his blood because they didn't like the toys, or the character designs, or various other things that Skir had absolutely no say over.  So that's a problem.

The show is pretty good overall.  Season 1 drags really badly, because while the season-wide story arc is pretty decent very few of the individual episodes have strong stories at all.  I think it's the best-LOOKING Transformers fiction ever, either in animation or comic books.

The toys tend to be pretty great.  The Vehicons are some of the best Cybertronian war vehicle Transformers ever.  The Maximals don't tend to get as much love fro the fandom, primarily because people were getting kinda tired of animal TFs at the time, but they're almost universally nice designs.  Aside from a small number of clunkers (really just Silverbolt, ultra Jetstorm, and Megatron), it's a wonderful toyline.
