my biggest beef was that when OP came up, rodimus GLADLY gave up the mantle of power AND the matrix (which chose him btw) that makes him a loser on dozens of issues (not to mention the fact that OP didnt become orion pax without the matrix, but rodimus became hotrod without it)

*tries to imagine Optimus Prime turning into Orion Pax again*

I love retcon. :D Personally, I'd like to believe that once the Matrix changes you, you stay changed. But that's just me.

Yeah, how many times did Hot Rod change back and forth into Rodimus Prime? Let's see... once in TF:TM (which should have been the only time)... back into Hot Rod in "Dark Awakening," then back to Rodimus Prime at the end of the episode... into Hot Rod again in "The Burden Hardest To Bear," and then back to R. Prime again... and then finally to Hot Rod after getting PWNED by Optimus in TRoOP, just in time for his Targetmaster reissue. Six times... seems kinda silly after a while. Also, it sort of diminishes the effect of his "transformation" at the end of TF:TM.

Of course, FFoD screwed ANY momentum that TF:TM had gained for the series from that very first suck-ass shot of Charr.

Perhaps you have to have the matrix for a certain amount of time before the change is permanent?

OR, it could have something to do with Matrix favoring semi-truck size transformers. Remember, Orion Pax was rebuilt into Optimus Prime, already a semi-truck sized tf, and the matrix DIDN'T change him. The Matrix also didn't alter UM while he had it, which is should have, since we saw it change HR back and forth to RP, when the Autobots didn't have a Darkest Hour to awaken it's powers.

And the whole reason the Matrix has this semi-truck size bias could be traced back to Japan, where the Autobot leader is always called "Convoy."

On that note, how can you have a convoy with only one truck? And what sense does it make to call a gorillia convoy?

Also, about the four-million years thing, I still beat you! Why? Because even as a MEMORY, Optimus Prime kept the Autobots alive for four million years! Boo YAH! I win! :P

I've always figured that the reason Op and UM didn't get changed was 'cause they never opened the Matrix. Okay, so Scourge grew boils but that could be 'cause he's a Decept. Anywho, neither were the "chosen one" bathed in the light of the Matrix.

In regards to Optimus' character/style... well, he was a samurai. Honorable, courageous, and skillful/powerful. He was the 'good guy'. I believe there's a description of Op in some guide from way back when, pardon me if I don't get it right, but it went something like this:

"He would be a better warrior if he were more ruthless, but then, he wouldn't be Optimus Prime."

Finally, I'd disagree that G1 wasn't good. Maybe, to quite a few people, yes, it wasn't good. But I wouldn't say it was the worse show around. To myself at least, the show's still watchable. Some eps weren't as great as memory served me, but even today, there are quite a lot of shows that are much worse.

True, it was episodic, but having a long story arc with lots of improbable twists isn't the end all and be all of things. Star Trek: The Next Generation, Get Smart, X-Files, Animaniacs, Batman Beyond, Batman: The Animation, Iron Chef etc. All these shows were mostly self-contained episodes. That didn't make them bad by default. And, long arcs do have their downsides as well.

Yeah, plot tended to be campy, but that's not necessarily wrong either. Even BW Megs brushed his T-Rex teeth. That's hardly high drama. G1 Megs corrupted the Autobots' recharging chamber to enslave the Autobots. BW Megs did roughly the same to Rhinox, and in a similar vein, to Primal in Gorilla Warfare.

I'd say, the thing to consider is that G1 was an episodic series aimed at a rather young group of kids with short attention spans. So, the show had to adapt to that.

On topic, Roddy was... alas, lacking in escapism. A more interesting character perhaps, and you're less likely to Mary Sue him in a fanfic, but sometimes, you wanna get home from school, unpack your stuff, and before you're called for dinner, sit down and watch Transformers, safe in the knowledge that Megatron will concoct a rather nifty yet dastardly evil plan, but be ultimately stopped by the Autobots, preferably with your favourite character getting more screentime than usual.

Watching Rodimus be angsty, before you hit that age when angst hits you for real, before you can truly identify with Roddy, it just gave you the impression that Rodimus was 'weak'.

Or so, that's what I feel, looking back in retrospect. Perhaps I'd identify with him more now, but at the time... not really. I wasn't really very aware of the difficulties of the world back in those days. All I saw was a rather immature guy I couldn't identify with at all, even when you took out the angst, 'cause I was a rather mild mannered kid.

Optimus though, you identify with him, not personally, but he represents all the morals you were told. So it was nice to see those morals being put to practice, 'specially if for instance, your parents tell you not to lie, yet, I'm sure we've many a time, seen our parents (white) lie.

You make a very good point, updatedude. I was a teenager when Season 3 aired, so I was ALL OVER Rodimus' angst. I loved him as a character (again, seeing the potential in him / projecting my own feelings onto him rather than going strictly by what was actually presented by the writers of the show). He didn't seem weak at all to me, just human. And he seemed more three-dimensional to me for that reason.

When Optimus Prime came back, it was such a disappointment. It was like Prime was a relic by this point. His outlook and leadership style just didn't fit a "season 3" world. It was like some guy from the 50's time-traveled to the 60's or something, if that makes sense.

But I guess for a bunch of boys with no hair on their nutsacks, they just want a daddy, not an older brother. :P

P.S. regarding TF humor and campiness, there's a difference between intentional and unintentional humor. BW Megatron's rubber ducky (and the "transmetal" version, which cracked me up) was intentionally funny. Spike saying "yeah, get down!" when Jazz cranks up that same lame-ass "rock" song in G1 that they always used is unintentionally funny. Just to be clear on that. :tflaugh

Who chose him? The Matrix? Who would have thought the matrix had a sense of humour and favoured the decepticons ;)

Heh there shows the perils of chosing someone based purely on looks as opposed to ability ;)

He looks like Marvel's Primus, not Dreamwave's.

Are you refering to that consept Scetch buy Don F? If so he has a Hotrod-ish head.
